With an introduction from SNL host Nate Bargatze, Coldplay opened with a beautifully raw performance of “All My Love,” which found Martin singing solo alongside a self-playing piano amid a starry background before his bandmates joined in. The British band followed with the upbeat “We Pray,” featuring guest vocalists Elyanna and TINI singing and dancing alongside the group as colorful neon visuals flashed in the background.
Coldplay first performed on SNL in 2001 and the band’s most recent appearance was in 2023.
The veteran group’s Max Martin-produced Moon Music, which dropped Friday (Oct. 4), features a variety of collaborations, including Jon Hopkins, Little Simz, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr and more. The set is a continuation of the group’s 2021 effort, Music of the Spheres, which opened at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
SNL season 50 premiered last weekend, with Jean Smart hosting and Jelly Roll as musical guest. The next show on Oct. 12 will see Ariana Grande hosting again, with Stevie Nicks returning as the musical guest for the first time since her one-and-only performance on the show in 1983.
Nicks’ band Fleetwood Mac has never performed on the long-running sketch comedy show. Grande’s return to SNL — where she’s been the musical guest twice and both hosted and performed once in 2016 — comes more than a month before part one of her movie musical adaptation Wicked hits theaters on Nov. 22.
