2 piping plovers hatch on East Beach in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — This year's piping plover nesting season welcomed two chicks on East Beach, the New Bedford Conservation Commission announced Friday.
The Conservation Commission said this marks the second- and third-ever births of the threatened species in the area during modern times.

Piping plovers are small migratory shorebirds that nest and feed along coastal sand and gravel beaches in North America, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
The birds successfully fledged and will soon begin migration after spending the summer along New Bedford's coastline.
"This success is due to the diligent work of city staff and our partners, as well as the exceptional cooperation and consideration of the general public and beachgoers for giving the protected nesting area and breeding plover pair the space needed to raise their young," the city stated in a Facebook post.
