Adam Sandler Claims That He Dresses That Way Because Used to Be ‘Jacked’

Contrary to popular belief, the fashion movement known as “Sandlercore” doesn’t have its roots in laziness — but we all know how activewear tends to take on the opposite meaning of its name.Despite being one of the most popular and profitable movie stars in Hollywood history, Saturday Night Live great and Happy Madison founder Adam Sandler doesn’t have the appearance of someone whose life is a nonstop tasting menu of red carpets, awards shows and black-tie galas. That’s because Sandler, like many dads in their late 50s, dresses for every such high-society event as if he just rolled out of bed and is about to start the lawnmower — sneakers, giant basketball shorts and a T-shirt that looks like it hasn’t been washed since Billy Madison are the only staples of Sandler’s wardrobe, and his slovenly appearance whenever he’s surrounded by his dapper, manicured peers at highly publicized premieres and parties has taken on a celebrity status of its own.In a recent interview with the Barstool Sports podcast Pardon My Take, Sandler explained that the origins of “Sandlercore” and his famous tendency toward wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes in every social setting began as a sort of bit going back to when he was a high-performance athlete with an impeccable physique. And, to be fair to his current dad-bod, Sandler still looks right at home on the golf course. As anyone who suffered through Sandler’s 2013 action/comedy movie You Don't Mess with the Zohan can attest, there was certainly a time when Sandler looked like he went to the gym at least once a week, and the reveal of his visibly outlined abs underneath an oversized T-shirt from a 1997 fun-run could certainly have provoked a reaction from unsuspecting beach-goers. But at the same time, Sandler’s claim that all the basketball shorts and rounded silhouettes of his red carpet appearances were originally in service of a bit that he can only pull off during swimming hours on the coasts strains credulity when it’s spelled out like that. While Sandler’s 2025 shape may not be Zohan-level “ripped,” as he generously described it, a 58-year-old father of two should never feel ashamed that he’s carrying around a little extra weight compared to his physical prime. I just worry that he still hasn’t figured out the fact that tuxedos come in plus sizes just like Superman T-shirts.
