Gold Coast skater Arisa Trew, 14, becomes first female to land the 900 trick
Gold Coast skateboarder Arisa Trew has become the first female to land a 900-degree spin in a half pipe.
The 14-year-old’s historic feat was captured on-camera and shared online, with Trew describing her accomplishment as “a dream come true”.
The 900 is considered one of skateboarding’s most technically demanding tricks, and it was first landed by skateboard legend Tony Hawk at the X Games in 1999.
The event’s Instagram page shared old footage of Hawk alongside Trew’s latest video, writing that “the legacy of the 900 continues” and that “the torch has been passed”.

On Wednesday, Hawk also shared the footage of Trew nailing the trick to his 8.8million followers on Instagram.
In the caption he wrote: “Arisa Trew just became the first female to land a 900. Glass ceilings are so 2023. Congrats @arisa_trew! ”
Trew responded to Hawk’s post writing: “Thank you so much Tony! Your (sic) an inspiration”.

This is not the first time that Trew has set vert-skating records. At the age of 13, she was the first female to land a 720 trick (two full rotations on the skateboard) in a competition.
This groundbreaking move saw Trew named action sportsperson of the year at the Laureaus World Sports Award.
As Hawk mentioned in his post, vert skating is not yet an event at the olympics, but Trew is aiming to make the Australian Olympic team for Paris 2024. Athletes can currently compete in “park and street” disciplines.
The park competition takes place on a varied course combining bowls and bends, which athletes use to gather speed and perform tricks mid-air. Street events take place on a straight ‘street-like’ course with stairs and handrails set up to resemble urban environments.
Australia will be able to take 12 athletes to Paris from within the top 20 (three per discipline, per gender).
Trew is currently the top Australian and world No. 2 in the Women’s Park Olympic Rankings, and is planning to seal her spot to Paris as the second leg of the Olympic Qualifier series in Budapest on June 20-23. She’s already won the park final at the Shanghai Olympic Qualifier series.
“In Budapest, I am going to do my best and land some solid runs and have heaps of fun,” Trew told the ABC.
“Hopefully I can get into the final and maybe another podium there, which would be super cool, but I’m really just excited to compete there.”
