Batman Arkham Asylum Series Canceled at Max

The planned Arkham Asylum series set for Max is no longer moving forward.
According to a report from Variety, it is noted that showrunner Antonio Campos’ DC series will no longer be happening at the streamer. No exact reason for the cancellation was given. However, a potential return to a series set around the iconic Batman location could still happen in the future, so there’s still some hope for fans. If it does wind up happening, it just won’t be Campos’ vision.
Originally announced in 2020, the series was set to be written by Campos. It was originally meant to be set within the world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise. Things later changed after James Gunn and Peter Safran came on board as it was then changed to take place in the new DC Universe.
What was the Batman Arkham Asylum series?
The development of the series seems to have been a bit of a tumultuous one. Prior to Campos joining the series in 2022, Terence Winter and Joe Barton were both set to write the series, before Winter left over creative differences and Barton — who had joined on after Winter — also departing as well.
Originally, the Arkham Asylum show was meant to be a drama about the inner workings of the Gotham City Police Department, but morphed throughout its development. It’s unknown what the final project looked like prior to being canceled, however.
Another spin-off of The Batman, The Penguin, is set to release later this year, and will see Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot in the series.
