Houston Builder Brett Michael Detamore Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud, Faces Up to 20 Years in Prison

In a recent case of financial misconduct, Houston custom home builder Brett Michael Detamore has pled guilty to wire fraud, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani. Detamore, the 39-year-old face behind Detamore Development LLC, admitted to the misappropriation of at least $1.5 million from construction funds that were originally allocated for the building of private residences.
The U.S. Department of Justice reports that Detamore issued false and fraudulent invoices to banks, which were tasked with providing construction loans for single-family homes Detamore had agreed to construct. This misrepresentation prompted the banks to release funds to bank accounts under Detamore’s control, and rather than using these funds for their intended purpose, Detamore redirected them for personal use.
In a plea agreement, Detamore consented to the forfeiture of at least the $1.5 million he acquired through illegal means. The case, which is being presided over by U.S. District Judge George C. Hanks, now awaits sentencing scheduled for Nov. 5. At this hearing, Detamore faces the prospects of a sentence that could amount to 20 years in federal prison, together with a fine that may reach up to $250,000, in addition to full restitution to the defrauded homeowners.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with help from the West University Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Karen Lansden and Suzanne Elmilady are heading the prosecution, as per Department of Justice's press release.
