No. 17 CJ Madden, RE, Sophomore
Purdue needs pass rushers. And CJ Madden is here to help.
A product of Ellenwood, Ga., and Cedar Grove High, Madden transferred to Purdue from Georgia in December.
He played in one game in 2022–when he redshirted–and seven last season, making three tackles. A former four-star prospect, Madden was unable to claim a role in Georgia’s rotation at EDGE during his time in Athens.
The 6-4, 230-pound Madden, who has three years of eligibility, hopes it all comes together in West Lafayette.
Madden flashed in the spring, when he worked with fellow rush end transfer additions Shitta Sillah (Boston College) and Jireh Ojata (Franklin College). That trio will join Will Heldt, a sophomore who looks poised for a break out, as the defense’s top pass rushers with Kydran Jenkins now anchored at inside linebacker–though he’ll also still see plenty of action off the edge after finishing third in the Big Ten in sacks (7.5) and TFLs (15.5) in 2023.
Madden looks poised to start opposite Heldt at rush end, a position that’s looking to replace the production of Nic Scourton, who transferred to Texas A&M after leading the Big Ten with 10 sacks in 2023 and finishing fourth in TFLs with 15.0.
