Takeaways from Alabama’s 11th practice of preseason camp

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama hit the field on Tuesday morning for its 11th practice of the preseason under new head coach Kalen DeBoer. Reporters were permitted to watch 15 minutes of the workout on the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields, and here are our takeaways.
– After taking Monday off, Alabama was back in full pads after two fully-padded practices over the weekend. After DeBoer said the Tide was relatively healthy – save for some typical dings from fall camp – we saw several players not participate in Sunday’s open practice. On Tuesday, we took a closer look at some of those players and their current availability.
– The running back group appears to be the most banged up midway through the preseason. Justice Haynes looks to be the only healthy scholarship running back. During the media viewing periods, Jam Miller and Kevin Riley rejoined the position line but both backs sported black, no-contact jerseys. Richard Young was also in black, but he was seen riding a starting bike on Day 11 of fall camp. The only running back not in uniform was freshman Daniel Hill, who we saw with a sling on his left arm on Sunday. No update on his status yet.
– Alabama’s offensive line had three players not participating on Sunday, but two players – and very important pieces – were back at work. Guard Tyler Booker and Jaeden Roberts took part in drills as reporters walked onto the field. That meant the first-team offensive line was back to full strength with Kadyn Proctor still at left tackle, Parker Brailsford at center and Wilkin Formby once again at right tackle. However, reserve lineman Olaus Alinen still appeared to be limited, and he was one of the players riding a stationary bike on Tuesday.
– Rounding out the injury news, linebacker Jihaad Campbell also spent time on a bike, but he wasn’t in a black jersey. Toward the end of practice, he was around the other inside ‘backers on the field. With Campbell not participating in individual drills while we were out there, the inside ‘backers were the same as Sunday – Deontae Lawson and Justin Jefferson.
– Watching the wide receivers run routes with the quarterbacks, the first three players were a bit different from the open practice. Germie Bernard and freshman Ryan Williams were once again leading the split ends, but Kobe Prentice was back at the front of the slot receiver line. Cole Adams was second out of the slot, followed by Bubba Hampton. Kendrick Law was at the back of the line led by Williams, so take caution when reading too much into this.
– Alabama’s tight end line, however, remains unchanged. CJ Dippre was once again first up at the position, while Robbie Ouzts and Josh Cuevas were behind him in individual drills led by Bryan Ellis. Rounding out the line was Danny Lewis, Ty Lockwood and Jay Lindsey. This is a solid position group that I’m interested to see in action in just 18 days (!).
– Freshman cornerback Zabien Brown continues to practice with a club on his left hand. But that didn’t stop him from jamming a sled with the rest of Alabama’s corners at practice.
– I spotted former Alabama kicker Joseph Bulovas taking in the Tide’s 11th day of fall camp.
*** What’s next: Alabama will return to the field Wednesday, Aug. 14, for preseason practice No. 12. After today’s practice session, Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and select defensive assistant coaches and players will be made available for interviews.
