Mike Tyson's trainer provides health update and addresses legacy concerns ahead of Jake Paul fight
Mike Tyson's trainer, Dewey Cooper, has opened up ahead of the boxing legend's fight with Jake Paul later this year.Fans from around the world are looking forward to seeing Tyson back in action, four years on from his draw with Roy Jones Jr.The 57-year-old had been due to face Paul on July 20. However, after an ulcer flare up, the bout has now been pushed back to November instead. There are some concerns for Tyson ahead of the contest, with the icon set to be 58 by the time he returns to the ring. His ulcer flare up, while minor, has sparked fears that something serious could happen when he faces Paul - who is 30 years his junior.Yet Cooper, speaking to World Boxing News, has claimed Tyson is 'looking good' as he prepares to return to action.“Mike is looking good in training, and his power is still there," he said."It will be on display on fight night.“I expect Mike to be Mike, and you all know what that means. When has Mike ever not tried to get an early knockout?"Cooper does believe, however, that Tyson's legacy is assured - no matter what happens.Paul, as a former YouTuber, is hardly the biggest name in the sport.Should Tyson lose, some critics believe it will tarnish all of his previous achievements.Cooper insists that won't be the case, however, and revealed he has no concerns about his fighter being ready in time.“Definitely not! No worries at all. If he continues his hard work in the gym, everything will go well for him," he added."The fans already know who and what Mike Tyson is."Therefore, there is nothing to assure."Mike has fought his entire life in and out of the ring; this is simply what he does and who he is.”Cooper doesn't think Paul poses a genuine threat to Tyson, either, insisting the 27-year-old may have 'bitten off more than he can chew'.“Jake is a smart businessman who chooses his opponents strategically, and this is no different," he said. Jake is already popular, but he won’t get the boxing acclaim he so eagerly craves until he defeats someone that the boxing public considers a feasible professional boxing opponent that is not 58 years old.”When predicting the outcome, Cooper made his stance crystal clear.“I expect Iron Mike to pressure Jake Paul and win the fight," he added. "If he fights again, I honestly don’t know."Only the man himself knows what his true motivation is and why he is doing boxing at this stage of his life.”
