Throwback Thursday: The Last Time Kentucky Beat Georgia

Looking ahead to a matchup with Georgia can make a football fan’s head spin. There are benefits to reflecting back to better days when Dawgs weren’t playing Murder Ball for Kirby Smart. On this Throwback Thursday, let’s turn back the clock to the time Kentucky went between the hedges and left with a win.
It has been 15 years since Kentucky’s last win over Georgia. The Bulldogs have the fifth-longest active win streak over another SEC opponent. To snap this streak, Kentucky will need some of the turnover magic the Cats had back in 2009.
Trailing 20-6 at halftime, the opening kickoff was fumbled by Georgia and recovered by Matt Roark. Two plays later, Randall Cobb was in the end zone for the first of his two touchdowns, and the comeback was officially on.
Following a two-play Georgia touchdown-scoring drive, the Cats delivered a counterpunch. Morgan Newton connected with La’Rod King for a 21-yard score to give Kentucky life. The momentum was slowly slipping away when Derrick Locke got to the edge on a screen pass. Despite nearly stumbling to the turf, he went unscathed 61 yards for the equalizing touchdown.
On the ensuing possession, Shane McCord picked off a pass to give the Cats the ball inside the 10-yard line, an opportunity Cobb used for another easy score. It was one of four Georgia turnovers, which is why Kentucky was able to walk away with a win despite being out-gained 487-260.
Locke had 160 yards of offense and two touchdowns and three of Newton’s nine completions were touchdowns in an unorthodox 34-27 victory. Rich Brooks recruited Georgia heavily during his tenure and those players tallied two wins over Mark Richt’s program in four years.

Randall Cobb Looks Back on 2009 Win
Cobb now spends a couple of nights a week in Charlotte doing some work with the SEC Network. It gave him an opportunity to talk about that victory in Athens, one he wasn’t so sure was possible when his teammates began singing along with Miley Cyrus at halftime.
