Minnie Howard Campus Gets Historic School Integration Sign
ALEXANDRIA, VA — The integration of an Alexandria school during the peak of segregation will be recalled with a historic marker being unveiled Saturday.The new historic interpretation sign is located at the Alexandria City High School Minnie Howard Campus, which recently underwent a renovation and expansion project. The sign unveiling is set for Saturday, March 8, from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 3775 W. Braddock Road in Alexandria.Now a high school, the location was home to the all-white white Minnie Howard Elementary School. The school opened in fall 1954, the same year the U.S. Supreme Court made the Brown vs. Board of Education striking down segregation of public schools. Two Black families with roots in the Seminary community — the Belk and Bradby families tried to enroll their children at Minnie Howard Elementary but were denied.
