SMU offensive players that’ve stepped up in fall camp

SMU Football is getting into Nevada prep, which means fall camp is winding down. Which offensive players stepped up the most in fall camp? Here’s our take on some standouts for the Mustangs.
QB Keldric Luster: As we wrote last week, Luster’s stepped up in his opportunities in fall camp. He’s delivered a lot of big-time throws and might be a product of getting reps against a third team defensive line, but he’s also making the most of the reps. Luster had a strong scrimmage on Saturday and delivered some big throws. Luster’s made the coaching staff feel even better about the long-term outlook of the SMU quarterback room.
RB Brashard Smith: The Miami transfer came in without playing much running back in college, but has adjusted well to his new role. He’ll add an explosive aspect to the running back room and can factor into the passing game as well. SMU’s missed that consistent explosive option in the run game. Smith’s got a chance to fill that role based on what we’ve seen.
RB Derrick McFall: With Camar Wheaton out, McFall’s been getting more reps early in his SMU career. In high school, he played all over for Tyler High, but has spent his time at running back this fall. He’s displayed some impressive patience for a young back and looks explosive. He might find a way to snag some carries, if SMU’s looking for a spark in the run game.
WR Jordan Hudson: Hudson’s elevated his game as well in fall camp with his improved route running while taking his competitiveness to another level. As far as 1-on-1, Hudson might be the toughest cover on SMU’s team, which has many around the building excited for his second season with the Mustangs. The evolution of this offseason could very well lie with Hudson becoming that go-to receiver. In fall camp, he’s shown he’s on the right track.
WR Romello Brinson: Another Mustang who has stepped up is Brinson, who is having one of the best camps on the team. He’s a true outside, jump ball winning receiver, but don’t sleep on the improvements he’s made running routes. One source called him the best on the team in that attribute. He also added 10 pounds in the offseason and it’s noticeable. He’s more physical and confident, which has allowed him to make more plays.
OT PJ Williams: Williams needed a strong camp to make SMU feel better about left tackle and he’s done that. The former four-star prospect has won most of his 1-on-1 reps and engaged in some terrific battles (with some wins) against Elijah Roberts. He’s got the combination of size, athleticism and bend you want in an offensive tackle. After moments in the spring where there was some worry about the position, he’s shut those down in fall camp. After coming in from Texas A&M with a little bit of baggage, he’s shown to be a terrific leader for his unit as well.
