Practice Report: Cornerback Trey Amos likes what he’s seeing out of the Ole Miss defense

Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos has played on good defenses before – namely at Alabama.
He knows a good defense when he sees one and, better yet, when he is part of one.
Amos, a 6-1 200 pound senior, thinks the Rebel defense for 2024 is “getting there.”
“We are going in a good direction. We are trying to play together with good chemistry and good communication and I see a solid defense coming,” said Amos.
Trey has been matched up against another Tre, without the ‘y’. Wide receiver Tre Harris.
“When you go against Tre, you better have a sense of urgency and play hard every snap, because he is going to,” Amos continued. “It’s good to go against great players.”
Trey said a lot of the things Pete Golding is running is the same stuff he ran at Alabama and Tre is comfortable with the system.
“There are similarities in the defenses. It’s been pretty easy and smooth for me,” he stated. “Some of the wording is different, but I’ve got it down. Everything has been good with the playbook. We all have to know what everyone else is doing and that has gone well so far.
“I like the staff here. They really dig in to learn the players and understand what we are good at and what we are not good at. It’s been really good here.”
One thing Trey likes a lot about being at Ole Miss is the attitude.
“Everyone wants to win. Everyone wants to compete. Everyone wants everyone on the team to do well. We know the person next to us is going to play hard so you play hard too,” he noted.
Instead of playing “Where’s Waldo?” we are still playing where’s Deion (Smith) despite strong feelings from the Manning Center yesterday that the talented wide receiver would be cleared late yesterday.
In short, Smith was not at practice today, meaning he not only didn’t get cleared academically yesterday, he didn’t get cleared today either because practice did not start until 6 p.m.
We have been assured, reassured and reassured again that he is going to be eligible for this season, but it just hasn’t happened yet. Let’s hope we aren’t playing “Where’s Deion?” much longer because the season is bearing down on the Rebels and the young man has some “learning” to do.
The first offensive line had two changes from yesterday, telling us that the coaches are doing exactly what they said they were going to do – look at every conceivable and viable combination to see who can help Ole Miss win games and who can help if/when the season extends into the college football playoffs.
Today, it was left tackle Jayden Williams, left guard Nate Kalepo, center Gerquan Scott, right guard Julius Buelow and right tackle Micah Pettus. The changes were Williams for Diego Pounds at LT and Pettus for Preston Cushman at RT.
The more we watch snippets of practice, the more we are seeing of Ulysess Bentley IV, Henry Parrish, Jr. and Matt Jones at running back in that order. Rashad Amos is certainly in the mix somewhere, but it appears Jones is having a good camp and is proving himself viable.
Linebacker Pooh Paul and freshman defensive end Kameron Franklin were both in regular jerseys today meaning they are completely out of concussion protocol and are cleared for contact.
Black jerseys today were freshman wideout Noreel White, senior wide receiver Tre Harris, senior wide receiver Juice Wells, senior wide receiver Jordan Watkins, senior cornerback Brandon Turnage, junior tight end Hudson Wolfe, senior tight end Salathiel Hemphill, sophomore safety Harrison Craig, senior wide receiver Jordan Smart, senior defensive end Princely Umanmielen, junior cornerback Jarrell Stinson.
Senior center/OG Caleb Warren is dressed in a red jersey, but he doesn’t appear to be taking part in many full speed drills.
As we have stated several times, none of these players in black are seriously injured and some of the older veterans are simply getting quality rest time.
The next media viewing of practice will be Thursday morning if nothing changes.
Stay tuned. . . .
