Deep Dive: Purdue training camp practice No. 11

MORE: Training camp content portal
It’s informative, it’s analytical, it’s opinionated, it’s the Deep Dive, a look at today’s football practice.
• With CB Nyland Green (foot) out for the opener, who would start opposite Markevious Brown vs. Indiana State? Botros Alisandro came out the first-team today, but he’s still battling Duda Rogers and Tarrion Grant.
• A new name missing today: DB Kyndrich Breedlove. Noted yesterday in this space he was getting worked on during practice for some injury sustained. DL Damarjhe Lewis was back out today. He’s been in out of practice all camp, it seems.
Others out today …
Green, OL Joey Tanona, WR CJ Smith, WR Kam Brown, DL Joe Anderson, OL Rod Green, WR Jayden Dixon-Veal, OT Corey Stewart, TE George Burheen, S Anthony Brown, OT Joshua Sales, NT Cole Brevard, DB Salim Turner-Muhammad and S Koy Beasley.
ILB Winston Berglund was in red but was working out. True freshman OL John Randle went down in a heap during 11-on-11 work, but he left the field on his own power.
Saw Smith, Green, Tanona, Green and Brevard at times watching.
• Scouts for the Commanders, Broncos and Ravens were here.
• P Keelan Crimmins got a hold of one today, sailing a punt 62 yards. Solid snaps by Nick Levy, one low by Claude Strnad. Bennett Boehnlein is a very capable backup punter, great holder.
No field-goal work today; instead worked “fire” calls and special situations operation.
• RB Devin Mockobee joked after practice about taking a lunch box to classes with him in the offseason in an effort to always have food to eat in an effort to gain weight. RB coach Lamar Conard even had a conversation with his parents about his diet. Mockobee needed more calories … good calories. Mission: Accomplished.
No pudding cups in his lunch box (no, it wasn’t a SpongeBob lunch box) but there may be been some Uncrustables. Mockobee is up to 207 pounds and looks a bit bigger. But, he still doesn’t possess a “wow” physique.
•. Primary punt return men: Dillon Thieneman, Andrew Sowinski. Also saw Markevious Brown and Ty Hudkins. Luke Jones and Luke Williams lingered after practice to catch punts. Thieneman and Sowinski lead the pack.
• With two projected starting WRs out in Smith and Dixon-Veal, along with Brown, the wideouts with the No. 1 offense were Jahmal Edrine, Jaron Tibbs and Shamar Rigby. Leland Smith, Sowinski also got plenty of play.
• Who stayed late to catch passes from the Jugs Machine? Edrine, Tibbs, De’Nylon Morrissette and Tayvion Galloway.
• The great Mike Carmin was seen at the end of practice. He just can’t stay away. No, he wasn’t looking for Danny Hope or Darrell Hazell.
• CB coach Sam Carter was wearing No. 18 today. You know what that means? Eighteen days until the Aug. 31 opener vs. Indiana State.
• I will say this: No. 4 RB Elijah Jackson can scoot! He’s only 5-9 but is built with power. Maybe we’ll see him this season. Jackson one carry to pay dirt today.
• Purdue may be working out inside Ross-Ade Stadium on Wednesday. We’ll be there.
