ESSAY: Brooklyn Nets potential 2024-25 City Edition surfaces online

It’s almost very close actually, to the .of the next Nets uniform jersey NBA Twitter has oncs beaten Fanatics and Dicks Sporting Goods yet again. Tuesday afternoon, X user @EldenMonitors posted “official” images of every NBA City Edition jersey, including a reputedly fresh design for your Brooklyn Nets.
It’s the second time this offseason that either new additions to Brooklyn’s uniform stock or new uniforms altogether have come out before official word from the team. Nike hasn’t released anything confirming that the images or the designs they feature are legitimate. However, they

If you think these jerseys look like they’re made by the same artist who made last year’s, that would make sense. When the Nets announced their 2023-24 City Edition threads, they also announced a two-year partnership with Brooklyn-based and New Jersey-born artist KAWS. This is year two.
The backdrop behind the leaked jerseys also has a similar look to last year’s with asymmetrical slashes covering its front. This year, however, they’re all grey rather than light blue and red. The “Brooklyn” wordmark strongly resembles the “Nets” script from from last year as well ... minus the different letters, of course.
“As a proud Brooklyn resident, I was thrilled when the Nets asked me to create a new uniform design,” KAWS said last year. “The history, community and passion of this borough create an energy that inspires my studio practice, the players and the fans. My design aims to capture the vibrancy that we experience daily when navigating Brooklyn.”
In this amateur graphic designer’s opinion, this mock-up is an upgrade from last year’s. It possesses a cleaner look minus the red and blue blobs. That approach fits better with Brooklyn’s identity, as the team has largely favored simplicity over flashiness since their migration across the Hudson.
Having said that, it also feels a bit lazy. Almost all of its features are either entirely borrowed from last year or at the very least seem inspired by it.
Be that as it may, there’s evidence suggesting KAWS was asked to do this. When the Nets dazzled fans with their 2018-19 threads, featuring a coogi design along its border, the Nets went with a similar look a year later, only with a white color base and the “Bed-Stuy” lettering in front.

Brooklyn debuted their Jean-Michel Basquiat jerseys during the subsequent 2020-21 season. And in 2022-23, the team brought them back but with a white base as well.

Since 2018, a pattern has formed where the Nets invent entirely new City Edition jerseys one year, then slightly change them the next, before finally moving on. It was only interrupted during the 2021-22 season, when the NBA celebrated its 75th anniversary and the Nets, along with every other team, paid tribute to their past with New Jersey-themed threads.

Brooklyn was proactive in announcing their City Editions last year, jumping the gun in April. However, most teams waited until early November. With that said, don’t expect any confirmation on these to come until several weeks from now. It’s the Brooklyn Way!
