Mike Tomlin makes $31m Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback decision which would see end of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields

THE Pittsburgh Steelers have been tipped to make a massive quarterback decision that would cost $31 million.
The move would also see the end of NFL quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, both of whom are set to hit unrestricted free agency next week.

If the Steelers don’t re-sign Field or Wilson, Mike Tomlin‘s squad could elect to add a signal-caller to the roster through free agency or trade.
The latter option makes sense to Fansided’s Tommy Jaggi, who thinks the Steelers should target Seattle Seahawks‘ Geno Smith.
“Financially, Geno Smith is the QB trade option who makes the most sense for his team to move on from,” Jaggi wrote.
He added that the Seahawks would save $31 million by shipping him this offseason.
Jaggi then said that it wouldn’t be impossible for second-year head coach Mike McDonald to want his own quarterback, as Pete Carroll brought in Smith.
“[Smith] would be an upgrade over Russell Wilson (his former teammate in Seattle) and could come at a reasonable trade cost,” he ended his argument.
Smith posted productive seasons with the Seahawks in 2022 and 2023.
He received the AP Comeback Player of the Year award in 2022 thanks to a 30-touchdown and 11-interception campaign.
However, Smith is coming off a down 2024 season, as he recorded 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
The 34-year-old has just one year left on his contract.
A trade for Smith would most likely cost a Day 2 pick and would be an upgrade over the 36-year-old Wilson and Fields.
It was reported on Sunday by ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler that the Steelers are more likely to re-sign Fields than Wilson.
The latter lost his last five starts, including the team’s Wild Card round loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Fields did show signs of progress when he stepped in to relieve the injured Wilson at the start of this season.
He had a 4-2 record as Pittsburgh’s starter to open the campaign, throwing five touchdowns to one interception with a career-high 65.8 percent completion rate.
Fields saw limited snaps off the bench when Wilson returned from a preseason calf injury.
After an impressive seven-game stretch in which Wilson led the team to a 6-1 record, the Steelers dropped from 10-3 to 10-7 and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
Still, Tomlin left the door open for a change at quarterback going into the 2025 campaign.
NFL free agency begins on March 12.
