2024 Paris Olympics: Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi apologizes to wife for losing wedding ring at opening ceremony
The high jumper lost his ring into the River Seine

Gianmarco Tamberi figured he had some explaining to do.
The high jumper – who won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games – was the flag bearer for Italy during Friday's opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics. However, representing his country didn't result in celebration afterward. During the proceedings, Tamberi lost his wedding ring which fell off his finger into the River Seine.
Rather than offer a sheepish apology and explanation, Tamberi posted a lengthy message to his wife on social media beginning with "I'm sorry, my love, I'm so sorry." The missive accompanied pictures of their wedding day, him waving the flag with the Italian delegation and a hilarious mock-up of him as Frodo from "Lord of the Rings" losing the famed One Ring.

"Too much water, too many kilos lost in the last few months or perhaps the uncontainable enthusiasm of what we were doing,” Tamberi wrote. “Probably all three things, the fact remains that I heard it slip away, I saw it fly... I followed it with my eyes until I saw it bounce inside the boat. A glimmer of hope..."
"But unfortunately, the bounce was in the wrong direction," he added, "and... I saw it dive into the water as if that was the only place it wanted to be."

Tamberi continued to frame the accident as romantically as possible, going on to suggest that his wife also toss her ring into the Seine "so they'll be together forever." And after the Paris Games, perhaps the two could renew their vows
Credit to Tamberi for a grand gesture and an attempt to turn a painful development into a prosperous one. This is a story that hopefully gets some follow-up during these Olympics or after the Paris Games finish. The men's high jump competition begins on Aug. 7.

PARIS — Here’s a sentence never before uttered in human history: Flavor Flav and the First Lady of the United States hung out on Saturday at an Olympic water polo match in Paris. Even by the come-one, come-all standards of the Olympics, this was a pretty strange, and fun, moment.
The Flav-FLOTUS summit came about in a very 2024 way: via Instagram comment. In May, Maggie Steffens, captain of the U.S. women’s water polo team, published a lengthy, heartfelt post about the honor of representing Team USA, her love for her team and the struggles of competing from a financial perspective.
“Many of my teammates aren’t just badass champions, but also teachers, business owners, coaches, physicians assistants, and more,” she wrote. “Some may not know this, but most Olympians need a 2nd (or 3rd) job to support chasing the dream (myself included!) and most teams rely on sponsors for travel, accommodations, nutritional support, rent/lodging, and simply affording to live in this day and age.”
Soon afterward, Flav — who had absolutely no prior connection to water polo, but does have an Instagram account and an eye for a good story — showed up in the post’s comments and made what he called a “FLAVOR FLAV promise,” writing “AYYY YOOO,,, as a girl dad and supporter of all women’s sports - imma personally sponsor you my girl,,, whatever you need. And imma sponsor the whole team.” Just like that, the founding member of Public Enemy, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and frequent reality show protagonist/antagonist became the most famous water polo fan … ever?

From a Russian prison to the Olympic Games: Brittney Griner opens up on her journey to hell and back
Pretty much the only thing that a 65-year-old rapper and a three-time gold-medal-winning water polo team have in common is the fact that they share a common flag. But in this case, that’s enough. Flav has already brought much more attention to a sport that, historically, has struggled to find attention in a crowded Olympic slate.
“Everybody wants to feel like they got their back covered, somebody has their back. And when they feel that, it makes them feel more powerful, that makes them feel better,” Flav said on Friday. “That gives them a lot more energy to go out and to get that fourth gold medal because these girls have got three gold medals right now. I want to see them get a fourth one, and I want to help them out.”
"He has really opened the door for people to learn about our team and different communities, different people who would have never heard of water polo,” Steffens said on Wednesday. “And that's exactly what sports like us need. He's been really great at shining any light back on us, and we look forward to having him here in Paris and just keeping that positive energy going.”
Like his fellow turn-of-the-’90s rapper Snoop Dogg, Flav is using these Olympics as an unexpected but effective form of image-burnishing. He’s appealing to the Gen Xers who recall him from his days in Public Enemy as they watch the Games with their children. He’s making some money off this partnership — he won’t say how much — via a five-year endorsement deal he signed to hype the men’s and women’s water polo teams.
And he is living up to every inch of that contract. He spent the first three-quarters of Saturday’s match — a 15-6 victory over Greece — high in the stands, cheering on Team USA with his own custom Flav jersey and water polo cap (and, of course, a clock). With the game well in hand, he walked down to the mezzanine level to cheer over the match’s final eight minutes.
That’s where he was — hyping up the crowd, posing for selfies, offering snap commentary (“They gonna need a lot more than four points to beat us!”) — when the word came down: First Lady Jill Biden wanted to meet Flav, but it had to be now, right now. Flav and several others dashed through several heavily tinted doors at the Olympic Aquatics Center, and there was the First Lady, sporting a custom-knitted white Olympics sweater and a wide smile.

“Thank you so much for doing this,” Biden told Flav as she and others posed for pics. Then they embraced, Flav pecked FLOTUS on the cheek, and then offered up a few parting words: “You take care. May God give you all his blessings.” Biden and her security retinue left the arena, and Flav returned to his customary role as hype man.
“Let’s go, let’s go, let’s GO!” he called as the seconds wound down, and when the clock hit zeroes, Flav uttered a call familiar to any child of the '80s: “YEEEEEEEEEAHHHHH!” He spent the next 20 minutes, right up until security ushered everyone out of the arena, posing for pictures, taking selfies, signing autographs, bro-hugging and embracing everyone who came his way.
Flav is still a one-man hype machine, and he’s firmly in the Team USA camp now. And if he keeps this up — and if Team USA keeps on winning — he might have to figure out how to wear both a clock and a gold medal around his neck.

From a Russian prison to the Olympic Games: Brittney Griner opens up on her journey to hell and back
Nineteen months after being released from a Russian prison, Griner is thankful to be in Paris representing her country.

PARIS — There were days Brittney Griner acknowledges, when she could no longer muster the energy to believe that getting out of a Russian prison was possible.
Moments like the one here Saturday, wearing USA across her jersey before an Olympic team practice, were beyond comprehension.
Griner was detained on February 17, 2022, at a Moscow airport with a small amount of hash oil. She thought she was heading overseas to play professional ball in the country. Instead she became a political touchstone, eventually sentenced to nine years in a bleak penal colony for “drug smuggling.”
Hope? Hope for an early release? Hope for freedom?
Hope was in short supply.
Hope "was a dangerous thing to have,” Griner said. “Because you have to just accept it at a certain point. There were points where I was like, ‘This is what it is.’”
The State Department deemed her “wrongfully detained” and in December 2022 the federal government arranged a prisoner swap for a Russian arms dealer who was 10 years into a sentence in the United States.
That won Griner her freedom but secured her additional criticism from some Americans who didn’t approve of the deal for a prisoner dubbed "The Merchant of Death."

Now she is again representing a country that has an array of opinions about her, here in France after boarding her first international flight since she returned from Russia. It is her third Olympics, but this one is different in so many ways, and not just because her now-wife and young son are back home. Memories of Russia always loom.
“It’s always with me,” Griner said Saturday. “There are definitely moments where it’s like, ‘Oh wow, this could be totally different. I could be seeing this beautiful view through the bars.’ It doesn’t go away. It makes you appreciate everything a little bit more.”
Griner was raised in Texas in a military family. Playing for the United States was always the ultimate goal, even better than her 2012 NCAA championships at Baylor or 2014 WNBA title with Phoenix. She won gold at Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021.
“It’s always meant everything to me,” Griner said. “My dad, a Marine, 1968-69. For us, for me to represent my country, it means everything to him and to me. Before basketball, I wanted to be in our military, actually. Now to be able to put [the Team USA jersey] on, to be honored to be picked again amongst so many amazing women, and be here a third time, I'm just really stoked.”
US' Women's National Basketball Association (NBA) basketball player Brittney Griner, who was detained at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport and later charged with illegal possession of cannabis, waits for the verdict inside a defendants' cage during a hearing in Khimki outside Moscow, on August 4, 2022. - A Russian court found Griner guilty of smuggling and storing narcotics after prosecutors requested a sentence of nine and a half years in jail for the athlete. Griner has a reputation for being kind and quiet, a far cry from her on-court play where she is considered, teammate Diana Taurasi says, an “intimidating, dominant force.” Here at the Olympics she is the center of attention, repeatedly greeted and congratulated by other American Olympians during Friday’s Opening Ceremony.
“Athletes coming up to me who followed my story [saying] they prayed for me,” she said. “It means a lot.”
She never expected that. Never wanted that. Just being here, though, has inspired her team.
“What BG has gone through in the last couple of years is obviously unprecedented,” Taurasi said. “For her to be able to put this jersey back on, to be at Opening Ceremonies last night. … I know she feels grateful, thankful.”
“It's remarkable when you think about that personal, deeply painful situation,” U.S. coach Cheryl Reeve said. “The way we felt for her personally. Despair. Loss of hope. The things she went through. It is remarkable that she is playing this game and is back playing in the Olympics. I think often about how difficult that must be.”
Griner figures she will get emotional at the entire experience, the juxtaposition of going from a Russian prison to representing the United States. She said she’s trying to just lock in on helping the Americans win an eighth consecutive gold medal.
“I'm trying to tell myself we don’t have time for [emotions, in order] to be locked in,” she said. “But there is going to be emotion here or there. There are going to be emotions everywhere. But it’s the Olympics, I think there are a lot of emotions for everybody.”
There were days she didn’t even bother dreaming of such a thing, never even bothered dreaming of getting out because it was too taxing, too overwhelming, too unlikely. Just dreaming hurt more than she could bear.
“So when that day came, it was even sweeter,” she said. “... I just appreciate everything more now. Taking in the bonding, seeing everybody, the sights.
“Appreciating that because it could be totally different.”

Cyclist Chloé Dygert has earned Team USA's second medal of the Olympics with a bronze in the women's time trials. Dygert battled through a slick, rainy day in Paris and overcame an early fall to earn the third-place spot with a time of 41:10.70.
Dygert was still getting treated on her left leg, which was injured in the fall, before going up to the podium and accepting her bronze medal.
Australian Grace Brown won gold with an impressive time of 39:38.24 while Great Britain's Anna Henderson took silver with 41:09.83.

Several cyclists fell during Saturday's race, with the slick Parisian paving stones being the worst offenders for the competitors.
American triathlete Taylor Knibb, who also qualified for two cycling events, fell three times before finishing 19th with a time of 43:03.46. Knibb's ride was a tough one — even her mechanic, when trying to give her a new bike, had a crash of his own.

Knibb, a rare dual-sport Olympic athlete, will compete in the women's individual triathlon on July 31.
Three road cycling races remain, with the men's time trials also on Saturday. The men will then have their road race on Aug. 3, with the women's road race on Aug. 4.

Top men's gymnast Brody Malone, the reigning U.S. men's all-around champion, is out of the individual competition after struggling during qualifications.
Malone fell three times — twice on horizontal bar, once on pommel horse — during preliminaries on Saturday to finish with a 79.598. He is now 11th in the first subdivision; the top 24 gymnasts from across three subdivisions advance to the finals.
Only two gymnasts from each Olympic committee can advance to the all-around finals. Given that Malone finished well behind teammates Frederick Richard and Paul Juda, who finished third and fourth, respectively, he will not advance.

Malone underwent multiple surgeries for a gruesome knee injury sustained last year, but recovered in time to win his third national all-around title in June. Malone performed incredibly well at Team USA trials, finishing second, just behind Richard.
He struggled on Saturday, receiving a 0.3 deduction on vault and earning just a 6.033 on horizontal bar, his best event and his highest difficulty. Malone finished fourth overall in the high bar at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, but is now unlikely to make the finals for the event.
Malone's only hope for the finals is to advance on an individual apparatus. He competed well on parallel bars, earning 14.533 points and finishing fourth in the subdivision. However, only the top eight from all three subdivisions will advance, meaning that an appearance at the finals is not guaranteed.
Richard and Juda, meanwhile, will move on to the next round. The former Michigan teammates competed well on Saturday, with Richard finishing with 83.498 points and Juda finishing with 82.865. With the first of three subdivisions complete, Team USA is currently second in the team result with 253.229. Great Britain is in first with a score of 256.561.

A pair of teenagers claimed the first gold medal awarded at the Paris Olympics.
Huang Yuting, 17, and Sheng Lihao, 19, upheld the Chinese shooting team’s history of success, defeating Korea’s Hajun Park and Jihyeon Keum 16-12 in Saturday morning’s 10-meter air rifle mixed team gold medal match.
The Korean team rallied from a 14-8 deficit and had a chance to level the match in the 14th round. Yuting and Lihao instead responded with their highest score of the match in the final round to earn both available points and close out the victory.
It was no surprise to see the Chinese duo take gold at the Chateauroux Shooting Center. Yuting and Lihao have partnered together throughout this Olympic cycle and cruised to a 16-2 victory in the gold medal match at last year’s world championships.
Kazakhstan’s Alexandra Le and Islam Satpayev secured the last spot on the podium Saturday, pulling away from Germany’s top team to earn a 17-5 victory in the bronze medal match. The victory earned Kazakhstan its first shooting medal at an Olympics in 28 years.
Three years ago in Tokyo, Americans Mary Carolynn Tucker and Lucas Kozeniesky earned a silver medal in the 10-meter air rifle mixed event, but this time the U.S. did not come close to duplicating that result. Tucker and new partner Rylan William Kissell placed 13th in qualifying on Saturday morning, while Ivan Roe and Sagen Maddalena settled for 18th.
Twelve more gold medals will be awarded on Saturday in the first full day of competition at the Paris Olympics. The most anticipated is the women's 400-meter freestyle final, which will pit American Katie Ledecky against rivals Summer McIntosh of Canada and Ariarne Titmus of Australia.
