Wiltfong Whiparound: Miami and Georgia aim to start July hot, big commitments coming, latest on blue-chip recruits

In the latest Whiparound, we look at a couple schools on the verge of landing several commitments.
We also dive into where thing stand with several upcoming announcements.
News, notes and buzz on some of the country’s elite prospects.
The latest below.
Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes closing in on key targets
Miami has 14 commits and sits on On3’s No. 17 ranked recruiting class. Head coach Mario Cristobal and company are looking to make a surge into the Top 10.
As the calendar flips to July, the Hurricanes appear to be on the verge of landing several key targets.
That begins with IMG Academy four-star linebacker Gavin Nix. A hard-hitting, instinctive, second-level defender, the 5-foot-11 1/2, 225-pound Nix will announce his college decision Monday evening. My On3 RPM is on Miami. Nix also took official visits to Oregon and Florida State, but no program recruited him harder than the Hurricanes led by the efforts of Derek Nicholson.
The On3 Industry tabs Nix as the nation’s No. 17 linebacker and No. 153 prospect overall.
Another big one looks to be on deck soon for Cristobal and company as Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin On300 safety Hylton Stubbs announced his decommitment from USC on Sunday and is trending towards the Hurricanes per the On3 RPM, including my prediction. Set to commit on July 4, Florida will work to try and change the narrative with the four-star Stubbs. Even if he commits to Miami, they’ll continue to pursue the in-state blue-chipper afterwards. But it’s the Hurricanes with the momentum after two strong visits this calendar year.
“Being recruited by Miami is an honor,” Stubbs has told On3 in the past. “Coach Cristobal and his team, especially Coaches Guidry and Jackson, have really improved the program. They excel at teaching the game, which could really enhance my play. I’m excited about what Miami has to offer me.”
Stubbs ranks as the On3 Industry’s No. 5 safety and No. 56 prospect overall.
Another coveted recruit Miami could be closing in on is Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman On300 offensive lineman SJ Alofaituli. In addition to his recent official visit to Coral Gables the weekend of June 21, he also took official visits to Michigan and Nebraska. Several sources agree that Miami is in pole position.
The On3 Industry tabs Alofaituli as the nation’s No. 4 interior offensive lineman and No. 71 prospect overall.
In addition to these names in the 2025 class, Miami is also closing in on its quarterback in 2026 as Orlando (Fla.) Jones On3 Industry four-star passer Dereon Coleman is set to announce his college decision this week with the Hurricanes trending there as well. Coleman is an young passer that threw for 2,236 yards and 16 touchdowns with another four rushing scores as a sophomore.
Georgia trending for a few
Kirby Smart and his staff hold 17 commits, good for On3’s No. 4 recruiting class. They’re in great shape to land three more prospects we haven’t talked much about.
The big one is a potential flip from South Carolina in Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale On300 cornerback Shamari Earls. A verbal to the Gamecocks since April, he’s left the door open for programs like Michigan and the Bulldogs, and an official visit to Athens the weekend of June 21 showed Earls a potential he is very excited about. The buzz is around UGA and my On3 RPM now reflects that.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Earls ranks as the On3 Industry’s No. 12 cornerback and No. 105 prospect overall. We are higher on him at On3 slotting him No. 8 and No. 69 respectively.
Bushnell (Fla.) South Sumter four-star safety Rashad Johnson will announce his college commitment on July 14. I believe Georgia has emerged as the favorite following an official June 14 and my On3 RPM shows that. Travaris Robinson is leading the charge for UGA in recruiting Johnson who is also looking at Louisville, Penn State and Texas A&M.
Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Rockvale High On3 Industry four-star safety Jaylan Morgan took his official visit to Georgia the weekend of June 21 and the Bulldogs look like the one to beat over Florida, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
Several blue-chip prospects set to commit on Monday
July 1 marks decision day for several prospects. We already talked about Nix. There are several others ready to come off the board.
Homestead (Fla.) High On300 receiver Cortez Mills took official visits to Nebraska, Clemson, Florida and Oklahoma and the Sooners appear to have the momentum. The four-star playmaker would be a nice addition to a class that ranks No. 10 nationally. He turned 79 receptions into 1,640 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior. With that, Mills is the country’s No. 15 receiver and No. 109 prospect overall.
While Texas Tech leads on the On3 RPM for Houston (Texas) Alief Hastings On300 edge rusher Smith Orogbo, he says his decision is coming down to Texas and Oklahoma. Orogbo ranks as the On3 Industry’s No. 13 edge and No. 95 prospect overall. On3 has him higher at No. 3 and No. 26 respectively. The Longhorns have On3’s No. 16 class.
Wisconsin has emerged as the favorite for West Roxbury (Mass.) Dexter School On300 offensive tackle Hardy Watts over Clemson and Michigan among others. Watts is the On3 Industry’s No. 14 interior offensive lineman and No. 215 prospect overall. On3 slots him No. 9 and No. 119. The Badgers have a nice class to date, 21 commits, good for On3’s No. 21 class. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound Watts would become the jewel of if he does indeed jump in the fold.
Logged a On3 Prediction in favor of Virginia Tech for Portsmouth (Va.) I.C. Norcom four-star athlete Matthew Outten as they pull away from Syracuse among others.
Kansas State led for On3 Industry five-star tight end Linkon Cure coming into his visits and that still looks like the case following officials to Kansas, Oregon and Texas A&M. Cure is the country’s No. 2 tight end.
Washington and Florida State have been battling for Spanaway (Wash.) Bethel On300 linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale and a source close to the blue-chipper on Sunday night leaned Huskies for the blue-chipper. Optimism has also remained high around Tallahassee as FSU aims to add to a class ranked No. 9 by the On3 Industry.
Ohio State has On3’s No. 1 ranked class and the Buckeyes are the trending program for On3 Industry four-star defensive lineman Maxwell Roy going into his announcement. Michigan and Rutgers round out the final three.
Buzz on other touted recruits
Jesup (Ga.) Wayne County On300 linebacker Tavion Wallace will announce his commitment on Tuesday. Florida State still looks like the team to beat but Georgia and their track record of development are making things interesting late. Florida and Arkansas round out the final four. He is the No. 3 linebacker in the country.
There is a lot of buzz around Colorado being the biggest threat to USC to flip Carrollton (Ga.) High five-star quarterback Julian Lewis, but Auburn is hanging in there and continues to have regular dialogue with the Peach State passer as well.
Miami and Utah are two programs that definitely have the attention of Edwardsville (Ill.) High On300 defensive lineman Iose Epenesa who also took officials to Missouri, Penn State and Iowa. The Hawkeyes legacy recruit is the On3 Industry’s No. 37 overall recruit.
Alabama and Notre Dame look like the two front runners for Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman On300 receiver Derek Meadows with Michigan, Georgia and LSU also in the picture. He is the nation’s No. 7 receiver and No. 37 prospect overall. The Tide have On3’s No. 2 class while the Irish are in strong at No. 6.
Other recent On3 RPMs include On300 edge Marco Jones to Texas A&M and tight end Hollis Davidson to Auburn. The Aggies have On3’s No. 8 class and the Tigers check in at No. 11.
