Driver stunned after getting $78 ticket for breaking new ’20 foot’ law – grace period is over & crackdown has begun

A DRIVER has been left stunned by a $78 parking ticket that was slapped on his car as he had no clue he was breaking a new law.
Many locals in California woke up to instant fines, waiting for them on the streets after the “20-foot” rule had come into effect.

The law, which took effect in San Diego on January 1, bans parking within 20 feet of an intersection.
City officials gave a 60-day grace period with warnings, but that ended over the weekend.
Now, drivers are finding themselves fined even without red curbs or signs marking restricted areas.
Carlos, a resident of Normal Heights, was among those ticketed on Saturday, reported CBS local affiliate KFMB-TV.
“It’s confusing for everybody,” Carlos said.
“The city doesn’t have to paint red or put a sign or something,” he added.
Many residents assumed the grace period lasted until Sunday, 60 days from January 1.
San Diego officials confirmed enforcement officially began March 1.
Citations cost a total of $77.50. The law is designed to improve visibility at intersections and reduce blind spots for drivers.
Parking enforcement in San Diego handed out 1,500 warnings since January.
Other cities, like Santee and Oceanside, also issued notices but in far smaller numbers.
Locals say parking is already a nightmare, especially in dense neighborhoods like North Park.
One resident, Annette, described it as “the worst nightmare” and said parking far from home is common.
“Sometimes we have to sacrifice and park really far,” she added.
New driving laws in 2025
Drivers across the United States are having to adjust to a slew of new road rules that take effect in 2025. Some of those include:
Daylighting law prohibiting drivers from parking their cars within 20 feet of any crosswalk in California
Stricter street racing penalties in California
Changes to car seat age and weight requirements in Colorado
Fines for failing to follow designated enter and exit areas for express lanes in Colorado
Bans on handheld devices while driving in Colorado and Missouri
Drivers allowed to have a digital copy of their license on their cell phones in Illinois
Yield right of way to emergency vehicles in Illinois
Drivers required to take a vision test to renew licenses in Kentucky
School bus safety law in Oregon
Vehicle safety inspections scrapped in Texas
“I feel bad for the people with kids.”
Some frustrated homeowners are taking matters into their own hands, illegally painting curbs red.
In San Francisco’s Richmond District, multiple fake red curbs have been spotted.
At least two drivers were ticketed for parking there, but their fines were later dismissed.
Officials are investigating reports of curb-painting vigilantes in other areas, including North Park.
Transit experts say the law is about safety, but many believe better enforcement is needed.
“There’s a lot of blind spots,” Annette said.
“But that’s where stop signs should come into play.”
For now, drivers should think twice before parking near an intersection, or risk paying the price.
