After George R.R. Martin, VFX Artists Tear Apart a Crucial ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Scene to Pieces: “It doesn’t move like fire”

Now, visual effects artists are expressing frustration over some technical aspects of the previous installment. It seems like the high cost of expenses has affected the quality of the show in the aesthetic department.
Expert Slams Dragonfire Effects in House of the Dragon
For a show that revolves around mythical creatures like dragons, it is important to allot a massive budget for its design. But, given that there are several fire-breathing monsters in House of the Dragon, the studio might have compromised a bit to keep their expenditures under control.
Corridor Crew on YouTube shared their opinions on the special effects used in the prequel series, particularly in the seventh episode “The Red Sowing”. Fans would recall that this was where Rhaenyra Targaryen attempted to find a rider for Vermithor and the dragon ended up burning most of the dragonseeds.

According to pyrotechnics expert Niko Pueringer, the fire that came out of Vermithor’s mouth doesn’t look and move like fire at all. He claimed that the flame was too clean and too contained. “Fire doesn’t work like this. I’m tired of seeing pre-disturbed bulbous fluid,” he started and later added that fire “shouldn’t be these pre-contained soft pockets of bumpiness”, which meant it should have speed and motion blur, unlike in the show.

One more important detail he noted is that the surroundings are very dark. When you have a massive ball of fire like that, the area should be bright and all lit up. Once again, he expressed frustration with Hollywood’s version of fire: “It doesn’t move like fire. It doesn’t light the scene like fire.”
Apparently, the dragons along with their extremely unrealistic fire took most of the chunk from the show’s budget. In consequence, the second season was cut down to eight episodes instead of releasing ten. What’s more upsetting is that they had all the money for dragonfire and still couldn’t get it right, at least based on the expert’s comments.

While the visual effects are crucial to the audience’s enjoyment, it’s not the top priority and could have been easily overlooked as long as the story doesn’t stray away too much from the source. Unfortunately, showrunner Ryan Condal and his team have seemingly enraged George R.R. Martin with all the numerous alterations.

The author notably slammed the show, enumerating various points of diversion from the book. He forewarned a long time ago about not having the license to do as anyone pleases just because they are working on a fantasy show. This time, he gave a caution again: “There are larger and more toxic butterflies to come” if the series pushes for the changes they plan to do in Seasons 3 and 4.
House of the Dragon is currently available to watch on HBO.
