‘This is our future,’ fume shoppers over ‘ridiculous’ checkout rule – employee backed down after customer pushed back
A SHOPPER has slammed Walmart after they got into an altercation with a staffer over a new self-checkout rule.
The customer admitted they were upset after a Walmart employee tried to micro-manage him in self-checkout.

A Walmart shopper took to Facebook after a staffer yelled, “You are wasting our bags!”
The customer was at self-checkout, double bagging his items so that the handles did not break.
He continued saying that if she didn’t like what he was doing, she could bag them herself, which she refused.
The Walmart worker and the shopper continued to get into an argument about the bags, but the shopper didn’t back down.
He claimed that she eventually gave up after multiple shoppers began watching the ordeal.
“She went back to her little Podium so she could continue texting or playing games on her phone or whatever it was she was doing before she decided to come over and critique my bagging skills, he said.
Other Walmart shoppers were appalled by what had happened to him.
“Sad. This is our future,” one person wrote.
“You handled that way better than I would have. The nerve,” another person added.
“Yep….I REFUSE to use those things, I will wait in line for a human,” a third person commented.
Last year, the store became more conservative about its bag usage.
It was announced that over 100 stores are getting rid of single-use plastic bags across 10 different states.
To enforce the new policy, Walmart began selling reusable bags near its checkout area for around 74 cents.
“Eliminating single-use bags is part of our effort to reduce waste at our stores and help keep communities and ecosystems clean,” Jane Ewing, the senior vice president of Walmart Sustainability, said.
Latest self-checkout changes
Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.
Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.
Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.
While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.
One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.
However, that test run has been phased out.
At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.
Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.
As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.
SELF-CHECKOUT WOES
Other shoppers have admitted to encountering other problems at self-checkout as well.
Some have slammed the company after certain Walmart locations restricted self-checkout, so only Walmart+ members can use the kiosk.
“If I have to pay to buy a product at any store I will never shop at that store chain ever again,” wrote one on X recently.
Another person shared a similar sentiment.
“First, they made me do someone else’s job by implementing self-checkout,” they wrote.
“Now they want me to pay them to do someone else’s job. I hate Walmart.”
“If taking jobs away from people by replacing them with computers/robots wasn’t bad enough, they’re now charging already paying customers to pay to use self-checkouts?” asked another.
“They’re not on the payroll.”
