Michigan basketball 2024-25: ‘Most talented team I have ever played on’

Dusty May’s first Michigan basketball team is very talented … but how good can it be? May said after going 8-for-8 in signing official visitors the ceiling was even higher than he expected, that after telling reporters at his introductory press conference he expected to field a competitive team in 2024-25 to set the tone for his tenure.

It helped, too, that he brought an outstanding player in Vlad Goldin with him. Goldin has a chance to be one of the Big Ten’s best big men after averaging 15.9 points per game at Florida Atlantic last year. He’s played a lot of basketball, is improving his shooting range, and is a flat out winner.
He opened eyes last week when he said this year’s Michigan team boasted a collection of talent the likes of which he hadn’t seen. Keep in mind, he and May helped lead FAU to a Final Four two year ago with an outstanding team, and the Owls made the tournament as a 9 seed again last year.
“This team is probably the most talented I have ever played (on),” Goldin said. “So many talented guys … it’s insane talent I’ve never seen before.
“I think we can championships — one, maybe two. I think that’s true. Danny [Wolf], Tre [Donaldson], Roddy [Gayle], Rubin [Jones], all these guys. Some of them are very experienced players, some of them very talented players. I feel like that’s helping us be an all-around team, well rounded.”
He and Wolf, another 7-footer, will need to get used to playing on the court together, he noted, but he’s excited about the possibilities. Wolf has shown he’s quick enough to guard, having reshaped his body, and he and Goldin should make it tough for teams to finish at the rim.
Overall, though, there are no egos on the team, per Goldin and program insiders — just a bunch of guys who want to win. That list starts with May, who Goldin had no hesitation following to Michigan once his coach took the job.
“I’m big guy on connections and relationships. It would be kind of hard for me to say, ‘oh, I was looking at different options,’” he said. “I was just excited. I don’t even remember what was in my head but, ‘wow – Michigan. Wow!’ It was amazing.
“When I was here on my official visit was probably how fell in love first time. It felt like no pressure. Nobody was like trying to be fake or indifferent. Everybody was hanging out. It’s a good sign that everybody’s genuine.”
And all eager, like May and Goldin, to win and win big this year at Michigan.
