State Rep. Marvin Pendarvis resigns from legislature amid legal malpractice accusations
(WCIV) — State Representative Marvin Pendarvis, who representedHouse District 113, has resigned from his seat in the legislature, as the troubled lawyer faces accusations of legal malpractice from clients of his, as well as having his law license suspended by the Supreme Court of South Carolina in May.
In a letter dated Sept. 16, 2024, Pendarvis said:
Serving in the South Carolina House of Representatives has been the honor of my life. Because of my respect for this body and for the residents of my district, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my seat. The residents of District 113 deserve a representative who can devote full time to their needs, and I cannot do that at this time. With great respect and my personal thanks.
In April,former client Adrian Lewis accused Pendarvis of failing to provide competent representation, settling the case without authorization, as well as forging his signature on the settlement agreement.
Lewis had hired Pendarvis to represent him in his wrongful imprisonment lawsuit in 2021.
Pendarvis declined to comment on the matter when asked.
On March 20, 2024, Pendarvis announced he would berunning for re-election in House District 113. He has held that seat since 2017 when he won a special election after Jackson Whipper (D) resigned to become a magistrate judge in Charleston County, according to Ballotpedia.
His seat will be vacant until a special election can be held.
