Energy Minister Lauds Canadian and Bahamian Partnership to Support Development and Economic Expansion

Minister of Energy and Transport the Hon. JoBeth Coleby-Davis said that for over 50 years, The Bahamas and Canada have enjoyed a strong diplomatic relationship, with trade forming a key component of the two countries’ friendship.“The Bahamas-Canada Innovation Trade Mission reflects not only the strength of our relationship, but specifically, our commitment to partnering in fields to support development and economic expansion,” the Energy Minister said during The Bahamas-Canada Innovation Trade Mission held at Baha Mar Convention Centre on Thursday, February 27, 2025.“As refined petroleum products account for more than 60 per cent of Canada’s exports to The Bahamas, we view this observation as an opportunity to expand our collaboration in the energy sector.”She said with renewable energy accounting for more than 17 percent of Canada’s total energy supply, she is so delighted that a considerable number of Canadian renewable energy companies are included in the trade mission.“As we seek to expand large-scale renewable energy supply in The Bahamas, it is my hope that local renewable energy firms can form alliances with Canadian companies to harness new technologies to support the Government’s efforts to diversify energy supply.”The Minister explained that The Bahamas Government is fully cognizant that the energy sector is important for national development and economic growth.“Energy security for our country and indeed our region is about the future.“Energy demand and economic growth go hand in hand – when one goes up, the other does as well. However, greater economic growth should not mean higher electricity prices.”She noted that as an island nation, it is a fact that The Bahamas’ fuel costs for energy production are very high.“And so, as we embark on a major transformation, the measure of our success will not only be the lowering of electricity bills, an improvement in reliability of electricity, and the transition to cleaner energy; but also, the condition in which we leave our country and region to future generations.”The Energy Minister said energy is a driver of economic growth – it is through energy that things move. She said without sustainable access to secure, reliable and cost-effective energy services, countries cannot grow and develop.“Therefore, it is important that we include energy issues in our national and regional development strategies.“As small island developing states, we consider energy to be sustainable if it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”The Minister said investing in sustainable energy is key to reducing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels, stabilizing costs, and improving energy security, while lowering carbon emissions and combating climate change. She said, “As a member of CARICOM, The Bahamas will do its part to support the expansion of sustainable energy solutions.”During the Trade Mission, His Excellency Mark Berman, High Commissioner, High Commission of Canada to The Bahamas recognized the Energy Minister as a recipient of the “Women in Energy” award for the outstanding work that she is doing in promoting the use of sustainable energy, increasing energy projects in the country, helping to implement policies to better regulate the energy sector and finding ways to help Bahamian consumers save money when it comes to electric power.
