4-star WR Marcus Harris focusing on three schools ahead of summer decision
Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei four-star wide receiver Marcus Harris named a top five back in April with the intention of coming off the board before the beginning of his senior season.
While the touted pass-catcher still wants to commit this summer, there’s been a shakeup amidst his top contenders. Harris tells On3 that he’s now focusing on Georgia, Oregon and UCLA moving forward.
“Really I’m just kind of close to the end. I don’t know how many OVs I’ll do. I don’t know if it could be two, one more, whatever feels right. I feel like I’ll make a decision late June or mid-July,” Harris said.
Harris logged an official visit to Georgia last month and took a surprise OV to UCLA last weekend. He was set to see Tennessee this weekend and Texas later this month, but the only official left on his schedule now is Oregon for June 14.
The Bruins are emerging for Harris
UCLA hasn’t been mentioned whatsoever in the push for Harris leading up to the summer. That’s changing in a hurry, as the Bruins provided a slam-dunk OV over the weekend and inserted themselves near the top of his recruitment.
Playing under DeShaun Foster and a staff jam-packed with prior NFL experience entices Harris. The in-state program right down the road could very well land his commitment in the end.
“Their NFL style. Coaching staff, all them dudes have NFL backgrounds, so that’s a big thing,” Harris said. “They have connections with NFL guys and they’ve also been at the top level, especially with Coach (Eric) Bieniemy coaching the Chiefs, having that offense, winning two championships, that’s big. Coach (Erik) Frazier coming from the NFL, coaching guys like AJ Brown. I really like their coaching staff, for sure.”
Georgia OV made a difference, Oregon remains in the thick of things
The official visit to Georgia was first up for Harris. Despite coaching changes in Athens, James Coley has built a relationship with the pass-catcher while Kirby Smart and the rest of the UGA staff continue to make being a Bulldog look appealing.
“It made a real big impact, actually. Doing the scavenger hunt with the coaching staff, getting closer with everybody on the staff,” Harris said of the OV. “Building a relationship with Coach (James) Coley, talked to Coach Smart a lot. That was a good visit overall. I got to see things better, how their offense is ran and what their plan is for me.”
As for Oregon, the Ducks have long been a contender for his commitment. Dan Lanning and Co. will have another opportunity to make an in-person splash next weekend as the Ducks try and land another commitment out of Mater Dei.
“I just really want to get every school one more chance to go out there and see what they have to offer. See everything for the last time before I make a decision. Oregon’s always been that type of school that I’ve always looked at dreamed about going to,” Harris said.
Development matters for Harris in the end
With Harris trimming his list of top schools and a potential commitment looming, things are tight between the Bruins, Bulldogs and Ducks. Even Harris isn’t sure who’s in front right now.
“I couldn’t even tell you who’s leading the race right now, I just feel like all schools are equal,” he said.
In the end, the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder is looking to get developed and get to the next level. That will be a major factor when the time to make a decision rolls around.
“Playing early doesn’t really mean anything to me. I would like to get developed,” Harris said.
Harris is the No. 171 overall prospect and No. 19 wideout in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 16 player in California.
