Where Is Darius Slay Going After Philadelphia Eagles Release?

Football fans are wondering where Darius Slay is going after the Philadelphia Eagles released the veteran cornerback on Monday, March 3, 2025. A source confirmed with NFL’s Ian Rapoport, an NFL Network Insider, that the 34-year-old would be released as a post-June 1 cut so that the Eagles will save about $4.3 million in salary cap. That said, several insiders as well as Slay himself have said which team he might be heading to next or if he might be retiring outright.
What is Darius Slay’s next team?
The top two candidates for where Darius Slay could be going next is either the Detroit Lions or, ironically, back to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In a February 19 episode of the St. Brown Podcast, the six-time Pro Bowl CB was well aware that he was a candidate to be cut despite being part of the Super Bowl LIX-winning team, saying that he had one year left on his contract but that this doesn’t mean much. He said he “might re-sign back, hopefully,” but if that doesn’t come to pass, the Detroit Lions is another strong option since he played with them from 2013 to 2019.
“For sure, the two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit,” he said of his near future. Either way it goes, he hopes “to play one more year for sure,” meaning that he doesn’t plan on retiring yet.
Insider Jonathan Jones on CBS said that Slay’s release from the Eagles was “not unexpected,” citing that rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean made their case to replace him as cornerbacks. Their performance made Slay more “expendable.”
NBC’s John Clark in a post on X (formerly Twitter) said that it’s possible that Slay “could still come back with the Eagles at a lower number.”
Darius Slay will join the list of Eagles players who will be hitting free agency this year, including Mekhi Becton, Zack Baun, Josh Sweat, and Milton Williams.
