Students in North Providence head back to school
NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Students in North Providence are some of the first to return to the classroom on Tuesday.
While more than 3,000 kids attend the town's public schools, only Pre-K to Grade 9 will be in class on Tuesday with the rest starting on Wednesday.
Students can expect to see a new remodeled media center at the high school and remodeled gymnasiums at both middle schools. The district also began construction on two new elementary schools, with the projects expected to be completed in two years.
When do RI, Mass. students go back to school?
"We have a lot of exciting things happening in terms of a new curriculum, therapy dogs for all of our schools. We applied for a grant, we're going to have a therapy dog assigned to every school in the district very shortly. But I think the biggest thing is the significant work that is being done to upgrade our facilities at the elementary level, the middle school level, and the high school level," Superintendent Joseph Goho said.
Goho told 12 News that upgrades to school facilities are critical for students and teachers.
"There is a clear link between student achievement and the type of facility that they learn in every single day," he explained. "We know that new modern learning facilities provide expanded learning opportunities and lead to increased student achievement and just make it more positive to come to school and to work every day for both students and staff."

Students should also expect some changes when it comes to the cell phone policy. Instead of phone pouches, students will have to put their phones in lock boxes as they walk into the classroom.
"We know that technology, when used appropriately, can be an extremely valuable tool in the classroom. We also know that technology can be a distracting factor in the classroom as well. It can also contribute to social-emotional learning issues that kids encounter," Goho said.
"They actually go in and have to have them locked up during class time, and then they'll be given back at the end of the day," he continued. "So we started to implement that last year, and we were really pleased with the results that we saw."
