NJ Launches 'REAL ID Thursdays' Ahead Of May 7 Deadline

NEW JERSEY — As the final REAL ID deadline approaches, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission announced this week that it will hold dedicated events in March and April that will offer residents additional opportunities to obtain the document.Beginning Thursday, March 20, NJMVC licensing centers will add nearly 4,500 new appointments on "REAL ID Thursdays" ahead of the May 7 deadline. Each Thursday, officials said licensing centers will focus on issuing REAL IDs. This includes license renewal appointments, where customers with licenses expiring within three months can renew their license and upgrade to a REAL ID at the same time, and REAL ID non-renewal appointments, where customers with licenses expiring after three months can upgrade to a REAL ID."Over the last few months, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in demand for REAL ID from our customers, and we’ve repeatedly added and reallocated appointments to better meet that demand,” Acting NJMVC Chief Administrator Latrecia Littles-Floyd said in a statement. "The new initiative announced today will expand access further, helping to service more customers who need or want to get a REAL ID."After years of preparation and several delays, the final deadline to obtain a REAL ID is only weeks away. New Jersey residents who are 18 and older must show a REAL ID, a passport or other federally approved identification to board domestic flights or certain federal buildings when enforcement begins on May 7. The REAL ID law, passed in 2005 in response to the Sept 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, strengthens national security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. To get a REAL ID in New Jersey, you must bring two proofs of residential address, one proof of Social Security Number and six points of ID (a U.S. Passport or birth certificate counts for four points; one-point forms of ID include a high school diploma, social security card, bank/credit union statement, debit card, property tax statement and more).A REAL ID is $35, while a standard New Jersey license or ID is $24.Federal agencies, including the TSA, will begin REAL ID enforcement on May 7. Agencies may choose to phase in enforcement, but TSA officials urge people to upgrade their licenses now "to facilitate a smooth transition."To further expand REAL ID availability, the NJMVC will also host several REAL ID Mobile Unit events on Saturdays, starting April 5.The added appointments for “REAL ID Thursdays” will be available for booking starting Friday morning, March 14, on the appointment scheduler at the NJMVC website. Appointments for the new Mobile Unit events will be added to the scheduler later in March.
