When Katy Perry shared that she was leaving American Idol at the end of last season, many were vying for her spot. They wanted to take on the challenge of being a judge, and names like Miley Cyrus, Meghan Trainor, and Jelly Roll floated around. Even some show alums were ready to hop right in, but ultimately, Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood got the job. It seemed like the perfect choice as she knew what it was like to compete, have judges criticize her, and make it to the very end.

Unfortunately, it has not been as easy as she may have thought. She has been visibly livid when America sends home her top picks, and it is not easy to be away from her home. However, some viewers feel that she is a bright light on the show. Now, according to an insider, everything is up in the air regarding the reality series and Carrie’s position. Allegedly, she was not at the top of the list when it came to choosing judges:
“They spoke with a handful of other A-list artists in pop and country before landing on Carrie.”
To add insult to injury, not everyone at the network supposedly wanted Carrie. Yet, she made the cut, and allegedly, Katy Perry has no plans to return. She is happy for the show but has closed that chapter. So, what is going to happen for next season?
It seems that American Idol will begin making big decisions regarding the show’s future over the next month:
“They’ll have more of an idea in the next month or so. Nothing is off the table. At the beginning of filming, everyone thought [Carrie] would be back next year. Now, it’s much more up in the air. Her Idol future is much more uncertain now than it was and I think that feeling is mutual.”
What Do Viewers Want?
As of now, American Idol’s next season is up in the air in terms of judges, mainly Carrie Underwood. However, fans have spoken about what they would like. Again, it has been very split as some fans love Carrie and her energy, while others couldn’t care less if she comes back:

Even if Carrie Underwood is asked back, would she accept? That is also unknown, as she has so much on her plate and loves her family, plus her singing career. There have also been questions as to whether or not the judges are necessary once America begins voting. Maybe Idol will keep the judges for a limited period and then turn them loose.
