‘South Park’ Fan Roasted for Admitting the Humor Is ‘Going Over My Head’

You don’t need a master’s degree to understand the layered, idiosyncratic satire of South Park, you just need enough cognitive function to realize that the fat one isn’t supposed to be your hero.Ever since South Park first took the TV comedy industry by storm in 1997, fans of the show who understand Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s approach to satirizing the small-mindedness of American society have had to tolerate the humiliation of getting lumped in with the crowd who thinks that they’re supposed to identify with Eric Cartman. South Park isn’t a particularly subtle series, but the runaway popularity of Cartman over every other character on the show has confused a large number of the fans into missing the point on the satire, because, obviously, the funniest character has to be the good guy, right? One South Park watcher and Eric Cartman superfan recently admitted that they don’t understand how the show is supposed to be funny when it’s just the story of an awesome badass whom everyone thinks is cool, even though he occasionally tricks his enemies into eating their own parents. In their mocked post, “Is South Park Humor Going Over My Head?” Redditor DeansFrenchOnion1 found the answer to be a resounding, “Yes.”“I watch South Park and I just feel like there aren’t many jokes or punchlines. I rarely actually chuckle or laugh,” DeansFrenchOnion1 admitted. “I love certain things about it — I think Cartmen (sic) is probably one of the greatest characters of any show ever created and the idea of following a bunch of 4th graders in a remote Colorado town is awesome. I just don’t find myself laughing.” Upon asking Reddit if anyone else has the same experience, DeansFrenchOnion1 found that other South Park fans were just confused at how someone can watch the show just to see Cartman as a dramatic lead. The top commenter responded to DeansFrenchOnion1’s question with, “I don’t think it’s possible for South Park to go over someone’s head, they’re pretty upfront with their comedy and if anything at times lay it one too thick.”“If your takeaway from watching South Park is ‘I think Cartman is funny,’ then yes, there is probably a good amount of humor going over your head,” another user added. One more fan chimed in, “Thinking Cartman is one of the greatest... combined with the rest of the post just looks insane."When pushed to expand on their belief that Cartman is “one of the greatest characters of any show ever created,” even though Cartman somehow doesn’t make DeansFrenchOnion1 laugh, the fan gave an answer that only left more questions: “I said Cartman is awesome — yes he’s evil/bigoted/etc, but he’s a very unique character who finds themselves in absurd, hilarious situations,” DeansFrenchOnion1 wrote. “I’ve seen more Cartman merchandise than any other animated character. He is awesome.”How Cartman’s awesomeness fails to translate to humorous moments in South Park remains a mystery, but now I’m wondering what specific piece of Cartman merch made DeansFrenchOnion1 call him the GOAT character. Hopefully it’s nothing from the “Cupid Ye” collection.
