What Kane Wommack saw from Alabama’s defense in first scrimmage

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama held its first preseason scrimmage this past Saturday inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Crimson Tide worked for two hours in full pads and ran 102 plays, head coach Kalen DeBoer told reporters shortly after the scrimmage’s conclusion.
Most of the questions DeBoer fielded were about the offensive side of the ball. He is, after all, an offensive-minded coach. But three days later, his defensive coordinator, Kane Wommack, provided his thoughts on how Alabama’s defense performed in scrimmage No. 1.
Wommack started off by describing the disadvantage the defense has facing the offense.
“Early on, I thought the offense did a really good job,” said Wommack after Tuesday’s fall camp practice. “We’ve challenged our guys to be able to respond early in games. That’s hard for a defense because, when you think about it, an offense is working all week long. They’ve got a game plan. They’ve got whatever they want to call it, usually, people call it their openers or their starters, so they’ve got their first 8-10 plays of the game that they really feel good about and honed in on.
“The challenge for a defense, but also an opportunity, is if we can limit them in the first drive of the game, it creates a little bit of a doubt in their mind on the things that they’ve been working all week long. But I thought our offense did a really good job in that. I thought our defense responded immediately after.”
Stats were not provided from the scrimmage, but both footage sent out from Alabama’s video team and intel gathered from sources revealed hints at what happened on Saturday. Defensive backs like Malachi Moore and King Mack tallied interceptions. Defensive lineman LT Overton was a standout from a pass-rushing standpoint, too, BamaOnLine learned.
Meanwhile, linebacker Jeremiah Alexander finished the scrimmage with the most tackles on the defensive side of the ball. Tackling was an emphasis in Alabama’s first scrimmage, as the team has worked to keep players healthy this preseason. DeBoer said he thought the defenders did a good job tackling, but Wommack was more critical of his defensive players.
“I thought our tackling was just OK,” Wommack said. “We’re running to the ball probably as good as I’ve seen since we’ve been here. But I think overall, from a tackling standpoint, those are things that you’ve gotta get better at from Scrimmage 1 to Scrimmage 2.”
Alabama will hold its second and final scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday, Aug. 17. The Crimson Tide will return to the practice field for Day 12 of fall camp on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
