Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti shows off league’s new centralized replay center

Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti has helped oversee the addition of a new centralized replay center that’s going to be where all of the conference’s replays are determined.
In a new video, Petitti showed off the league’s replay center. Eight different monitors are clearly visible behind him as he speaks in the video as well as several other monitors. It’s similar to the replay center that the SEC has used in Birmingham in recent years.

“It all comes down to people having to make decisions, sometimes very difficult, very close decisions,” Tony Petitti can be heard saying in the video. “Our job in this replay center is to provide a technology, the speed, the looks, the ability to make great decisions as quickly as possible.”

Replay can be a controversial part of officiating a football game. There are times when it takes a long time to determine a call, disrupting the flow of the game. Other times, fans are going to disagree with a call. So, the hope with this center is to get the right call made as quickly as possible.
“So, really what all this is about…you can imagine on a gameday the activity in this room. It’s about the training that’s gone into making sure we have all of his people ready to go. So, it’s a lot of work here not only getting them used to the job but also used to this new technology. So, it’s been a lot of training going in to getting our people ready for this,” Petitti said.
“It shows the commitment the Big Ten has to getting things right for our student-athletes, our coaches, our fans, and I’m really confident that the combination of the staff that Bill, AJ, and Dean Blandino have put together with this technology is gonna get us to the right place. So, that’s the goal is to get things right. This facility is gonna put us on a great path to do that virtually all of the time.”
With the SEC already having a similar replay center in use, the Big Ten isn’t necessarily breaking new ground. However, that does give the conference a model to follow and potentially improve on in some way.
The first Big Ten game this season will be on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. EST when Rutgers hosts Howard.
