Hall of Fame in October; Jersey retirement in January. It’ll be wheels up at Barclays Center this January 25th. That’s when the Brooklyn Nets will hoist Vince Carter’s No. 15 to the rafters, the seventh jersey retired by the organization. On Thursday, the Nets announced the date for the long awaited retirement ceremony for VC who will enter the Basketball Hall of Fame next month.
“Come fly with us,” the Nets wrote across all their social media platforms Thursday morning to announce the event. For those who don’t have their Nets calendar handy, Brooklyn is scheduled to face off against the Miami Heat that day, a Saturday, at 6:00 p.m. EST.

“January 25th, it is official,” Carter said himself not long after. “Number 15 goes up into the rafters at Barclays Center alongside Dr. J and Jason Kidd. Come join us. It should be fun. It should be special. Salute.”

“We are thrilled to honor former Nets player Vince Carter, who contributed so much to this organization both on and off the court,” said Nets Governor Joe Tsai via a press release. “He is an important part of the Nets franchise history and we look forward to welcoming him to Barclays Center this season to celebrate his legacy.”
Carter will become the seventh Net to see his jersey raised high — and the first in 11 years, joining Dražen Petrović (#3), Kidd (#5), John Williamson (#23), Bill Melchionni (#25), Julius Erving (#32), and Charles “Buck” Williams (#52). Kidd’s was the last jersey retired, back in 2013 when he was the Nets head coach. The Nets first announced their plans to retire VC’s number on May 15th, when Kidd congratulated him among others.
VC earned three consecutive All-Star bids from 2005-2007 while with the Nets. Only he, Kidd, and Williams have represented the team three times or more on that stage.

While Carter gave many of his best years to the Nets, he also dazzled fans before as a member of the Toronto Raptors. Toronto has yet to give Carter his flowers with a jersey retirement. However, it does appear they plan to pay some homage to him this season, specifically his 2000 NBA Slam Dunk contest performance.
Carter’s retirement ceremony with Brooklyn will also come a day before his 48th birthday, giving Vinsanity and his fans two things to celebrate for the price of one.
