Miami Hurricanes 50-1 Countdown: Ranking the top 50 post-spring players … No. 33 JoJo Trader
The Miami Hurricanes have massively reshaped the roster from a year ago with five primary offensive starters gone (QB Tyler Van Dyke, RB Henry Parrish, WR Colbie Young, OL Javion Cohen and Matt Lee) along with seven on the defensive side (DT Leonard Taylor, DT Branson Deen, DL Jared Harrison-Hunte, S Kam Kinchens, S James Williams, CB Jaden Davis and CB Te’Cory Couch).
50. RB JORDAN LYLE … 49. RB CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON … 48. DE COLE MCCONATHY … 47. S ZAQUAN PATTERSON … 46. TE CAM MCCORMICK … 45. NY CARR … 44. JUSTIN SCOTT … 43. OT Markel Bell … 42. RB AJAY ALLEN … 41. Which brings us to our annual series breaking down the top 50 players on the current roster. As we go along on this list you’ll get an idea of the overall depth of talent on Mario Cristobal’s team this year as he seeks Miami’s second 10-win season in the last two decades.
Today we are at No. 33:
NO. 33 WR JOJO TRADER
Why He’s No. 33
JoJo Trader was a bigtime recruit Miami landed in the last recruiting cycle, and as an early enrollee he showed in spring ball that he’s ready for an immediate role. He ran crisp routes, showed a good understanding of the offense and the technique needed at the next level, and his hands are as good as you’ll find … with one-handed catches looking as easy for him as getting two hands on the ball. The only real obstacle to him having a lot of playing time is experience, since he has veterans Jacolby George, Isaiah Horton and Houston transfer Sam Brown ahead of him at the outside receiver positions. As a refresher, Trader was ranked the nation’s No. 10 receiver by On3 out of Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna, and ESPN rated him a five-star prospect. His senior year he caught 47 passes for 473 yards with seven touchdowns, earning him other offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Texas. So his upside is tremendous.
What he needs to do to move up this list
Trader says he models his game after Odell Beckham … including the one-handed catches that he shows off in practices. He also said this spring he heard a lot of comparisons to NFL star receiver Justin Jefferson. You get a sense of his incredibly high ceiling watching him play this spring, and the reality is he could push to start in Year 1 if he’s that much better than a Horton or Brown. But he’ll have to earn it with a big summer and then showing consistent playmaking in fall drills.
Realistic season objective
Miami doesn’t NEED Trader to show out in Year 1, but if he’s one of the top three most talented receivers on the roster (and many think he is/will be), then it’s hard to keep him on the bench. So we see him getting into games and making his presence felt. Would 400+ yards and four or five TDs be too much to ask for? We don’t think so.
