Kelly Clarkson missed several episodes of her daytime talk show earlier this year. She never really addressed the reason why she missed filming the show, though online speculation said it was a family matter. It turns out that her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, was privately battling cancer for the last few years. Her absence was likely due to that.
Last month, she abruptly canceled the opening of her Las Vegas residency, citing vocal issues. On August 6, she canceled the remaining dates for August because her ex-husband was ill. However, at that time, no one knew the extent of his illness. He died the next day after secretly battling cancer for three years.

The divorce battle between the former couple lasted several years. They fought over money, with her ex-husband wanting a large chunk of Kelly Clarkson’s earnings. They eventually settled the divorce. But during the height of the battle, she rewrote a song she previously wrote about her ex into a diss song.
When she released the song “Piece by Piece” in 2015, it was a song about how her then-husband was a better man and father than her own estranged father was.
“He never walks away. He never asks for money. He takes care of me. He loves me. Piece by piece, he restored my faith. That a man can be kind and a father could stay,” she sang about Brandon Blackstock.
In 2023, she changed the lyrics to “I just walk away, when they ask for money. I take care of me ‘cause I love me. Piece by piece I restored my faith that a heart can still beat even when it breaks.”
Just days before her ex-husband died, Kelly Clarkson shared one final rewrite. “I’m 43. I’ve done some therapy, and I changed the lyrics now and I think it’s perfect,” she told the audience.
Kelly Clarkson added, “It just represents, kind of, I don’t know I feel like we grow up, right? And this is the more grown up version of it.”

One audience member filmed Kelly Clarkson performing the song during her Las Vegas residency. The American Idol winner was in tears before she even started singing the latest version.
She eventually gave up trying to hold back the tears and launched into the song.
“I’m learning everyday how to love me. I let go of the shame that you taught me. Piece by piece I restored the faith that a heart can still beat even if it breaks,” she sang in the updated chorus.
Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock’s divorce was messy, but she put that aside to be there for her kids during his final days.
