India are all set to begin a new era in cricket as Gautam Gambhir officially takes over for the first time since being appointed as the new head coach of the Men in Blue, when they travel to Sri Lanka for a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series. India have announced their squads for both the series, and the big news is that Hardik Pandya was not made the captain in T20Is, with Suryakumar Yadav being preferred over him. Now, it looks like the new head coach Gambhir did not reportedly want to work with Pandya as the captain.According to a report by Hindustan Times, Gautam Gambhir had an informal call with the BCCI on July 17 with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee present before the team was announced. In that meeting Gambhir said that he wanted to work with a captain who would not have workload management issues, thus indirectly hinting at Suryakumar Yadav. Hardik Pandya has had his fair share of problems with injuries, and hence he was not Gambhir's choice to become T20I captain.“Although Gambhir did not directly pitch for Surya in the call, he made it amply clear that he would want to work with a captain whose workload does not become a stumbling block. Agarkar was clear with his views,” a source close to the proceedings informed the publication.In fact, Hardik Pandya has not even been made the vice-captain for the T20I series against Sri Lanka. It is Shubman Gill who has been given that spot. Gill was the captain of India in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, and came out with flying colours leading the Men in Blue to a 4-1 series win. In fact, there have been reports that Suryakumar Yadav will be the permanent captain of the shortest format for India after Rohit Sharma's retirement. He will also lead the team in the T20 World Cup 2026.Hardik Pandya will play in the T20I series, but has opted out of the ODI series because of personal reasons.
