‘Ridiculous,’ rages Walmart shopper after store has just one cashier – ‘they’re trying to force you to use self-checkout
A WALMART shopper is tired of waiting in long checkout lines after the grocer only opened one lane during weekdays at his local store.
Jessie Lee, from Missouri, is among the long list of Walmart customers who aren’t happy with their checkout experience.

In an X thread complaining about the long lines that await customers, Lee revealed his local store only has “one lane open during the week.”
He accused the mega grocer on X of “trying to force you to use self-checkout.”
“They pay 4-6 people to watch cameras and the lanes instead of putting them on drawers. Ridiculous.”
Another X user, who goes by the username A Torch, said his store only had four of 22 checkout lanes open, calling it a “total disaster and a result of corporate greed.”
But it’s not just the regular lanes customers are fed up with, shoppers across the country are demanding more self-checkout lanes to open up as well.
Walmart began reserving some self-checkout lanes for Walmart+ customers, leaving regular shoppers disgruntled by being forced to wait in long lines.
Some have even threatened to stop shopping at the chain and go its competitor, Target, to avoid the lines.
A Missouri Walmart defended its inconsistent checkout lane schedule, telling Fox affiliate KTVI: “From time to time, our stores adjust the use of staffed checkouts and self-checkouts.
“As the number of shoppers and associate staffing increases, these stores open self-checkout registers to manage the increased customer flow. This process isn’t new.’
Long lines aren’t the only complaints customers have, but getting their receipts checked at the end of their visit is sending them over the edge.
A staple at membership clubs, like Sam’s Club and Costco, has been making it way into Walmart stores and many customers are having none of it, with many refusing to show them to employees.
While other customers are complaining the company is overcharging them for items.
In January, Walmart paid a $45 million settlement for a class-action lawsuit that accused the grocer of overcharging customers in Florida for citrus and meat products.
The class-action suit accused Walmart in October 2022 of overcharging customers on pork, poultry, and seafood items, as well as, bulk oranges and grapefruits between October 19, 2018 to January 19, 2024.
Customers had until June 5 of this year to claim their settlement money, which went up to a total of $500.
Those without receipts, could receive up to $25, according to the settlement.
Customers received 2% of the total cost of the weighted products, according to the settlement.
“We will continue providing our customers everyday low prices to help them save money on the products they want and need,” a spokesperson told ABC News.
“We still deny the allegations, however, we believe a settlement is in the best interest of both parties.”
The company admits to no wrongdoing.
Latest self-checkout changes
Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.
Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.
Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.
While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.
One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.
However, that test run has been phased out.
At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.
Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.
As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.
