Ole Miss has officially started the ‘grind’ for anticipated 2024 season
Technically, spring training is when the next football season begins for Ole Miss.
Those preparations are vital to players learning the playbook and to prove themselves and for the coaches to have a personnel evaluation time and installation period for their offensive and defensive systems.
But Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has taken more of a professional approach to spring drills – very little full contact, no marathon practices like some coaches have had in spring in the past, and being very lenient in letting nicked up players heal before putting them into high stress activities.
The Rebels are coming off a two-to-three-week respite from the offseason session that picks up after spring drills. While we aren’t privy to actual weight room numbers with this staff, we’ve heard from several players the session was highly competitive and productive.
Players attacked and addressed specific need areas – weight issues, speed areas, specific needs in strength such as upper or lower body – and were successful doing what needed to be done.
Now, the real grind begins.
For all intents and purposes, the 2024 football season has officially started.
Strength & conditioning coach Nick Savage will now have the controls for the next couple of months with the summer offseason program starting up full blast.
We know folks like details, but basically there’s not much to say about the offseason program. Lots of lifting, lots of conditioning/running and lots of hard work. Savage’s job is to have the Rebels “bigger, faster, stronger and in top shape” for when practice starts in the dog days of August.
The Rebels will also take it upon themselves to do volunteer work – 7-on-7 passing drills with the skill position players and football related drills for the linemen.
Time off will be very limited – maybe a couple of days between summer sessions and a day or two after second semester summer school and the first day of August practice, so the focus on the 2024 season by the players starts now.
For some Ole Miss players, the ones who were the walking wounded during spring, to get back into the action as healthy players able to take on all the offseason tasks required.
During spring, DE Princely Umanmielen, WR Juice Wells, TE Dae’Quan Wright, RB Ulysses Bentley IV, freshman DE Cam Clark, OT Micah Pettus, OT Diego Pounds, OL Gerquan Scott and DT Jeffery Rush were among the players who missed at least some full speed action.
As you can see, several of those players will be counted on heavily either as starters or in the rotation. Obviously, their health during the summer session and how quickly they can get in football shape will be key to how this season unfolds.
Grapevine talk has all those players ready to rumble by August, but seeing is believing. The hope here is that none of them are in black jerseys when the pads come on in the month leading up to the season.
These next two months are a vital part of the development of a team, from a physical, mental and chemistry standpoint.
Yes, the grind has started.
Don’t blink slowly because the season will be upon us.
