Battling a disease or illness is difficult for an ordinary person. It’s even more difficult to those in the public eye. Actor Chadwick Boseman’s physical appearance sparked a lot of online chatter a few years ago and fans eventually found out that he was privately battling cancer, a battle he lost in 2020.
Bachelorette star Katie Thurston was diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago. She’s only 34, so the diagnosis was a huge shock. Despite the difficult times, she’s been sharing her cancer journey with fans who watched her on the ABC reality show. In a recent message to fans, she spoke out against the constant comment she gets about the cancer being terminal.
Katie Thurston Warns Of Misinformation About Breast Cancer
Katie Thurston was on both of the ABC reality shows The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. She eventually found love off camera with comedian Jeff Arcuri. They went public with their romance last summer and quickly got engaged. However, a major development in Katie’s health put a cloud over what should have been the happiest times in their lives.

After discovering a lump, she underwent tests that revealed a diagnosis of breast cancer. Further tests revealed that she was at Stage 4 of the disease. Katie is currently considering legal action against the her former medical provider for originally misdiagnosing her.
Katie Thurston does have Stage 4 breast cancer, but hers is less aggressive and as of right now, doesn’t require chemotherapy as treatment. She has kept her fans in the loop about every step of her cancer journey.
During a recent Q&A on her Instagram Story, a fan warned Katie about a lot of misinformation being spread about Stage 4 cancer in the comments of Katie’s posts.
Katie Thurston agreed that misinformation is a problem. “As helpful as online support has been, it can also be hurtful and add extra unnecessary fear,” she responded.
The reality star recommended that people seek advice from medical professionals instead of comments from online strangers. “Cancer isn’t a one size fits all,” she reminded her followers. As Katie Thurston said, even chemotherapy can differ from patient to patient.

Bachelorette Star Slams ‘Terminal’ Cancer Comments
The spread of misinformation wasn’t the only issue the Bachelorette star addressed on social media. Some of those “hurtful” comments she mentioned in regard to misinformation is the word “terminal” in relation to cancer.
In a separate Q&A, she addressed whether her Stage 4 is terminal or not. She said that yes, it is terminal technically because there’s no cure. However, she tries to be optimistic about her chances of living a long life despite the breast cancer diagnosis.
“It’s serious,” she said, “but it’s not the end.” Katie added that people can have Stage 4 cancer but also have “no evidence of disease” in their bodies.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Teddi Mellencamp is going through something similar with online comments about her cancer. She revealed earlier this year that the skin cancer she thought was gone has spread to her brain. She had two tumors removed earlier this year, but the others are inoperable.
Despite the unlikely odds, Teddi doesn’t appreciate comments about her cancer being terminal.
What do you think of people leaving comments on Katie’s post calling her cancer “terminal?”
