Democratic Governors, Including Illinois' Pritzker, to Discuss Biden's Reelection Campaign Strategy After Debate Concerns
In a move that underscores the tension within the Democratic Party, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, along with other Democratic governors, is set to meet with President Joe Biden on Wednesday to discuss the president's reelection campaign and address concerns following a widely criticized debate performance, NBC Chicago reports.
This gathering, expected to include at least 20 Democratic governors either in person or virtually, was precipitated by a debate that has caused a stir within the party and led to questions about Biden's readiness for a second term; amidst these questions, Pritzker, who has not spoken with Biden since the debate, maintains his support, saying on CNN, "Joe Biden is going to be our nominee, unless he decides otherwise," as per NBC Chicago.
The urgent conference call led by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, which took place on Monday evening, had the governors questioning why they had not been in touch with Biden since the contentious debate, claims a source with direct knowledge in an article by Chicago Sun-Times.
Despite evident concerns, the president's team insists there are no plans for Biden to bow out of the race, and White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre reaffirmed the president's intention to run, stating, “He understands it is fair for people to ask that question," as reported by NBC Chicago. A meeting in the Roosevelt Room of the White House is scheduled for Wednesday evening, to which Pritzker and other governors aim to directly hear from Biden about the future of his campaign and strategies moving forward.
Pressure is not only rising from Pritzker and his peers; following the difficult debate, Rep. Mike Quigley expressed concern, telling CNN’s Kasie Hunt, “But it’s his decision. I just want him to appreciate at this time, just how much it impacts not just his race, but all the other races coming in November,” hinting at the ripple effects Biden's candidacy could have on the party's success overall. Governors like New Jersey's Phil Murphy, who recently spent time with Biden, stand as exceptions among those who have been in recent dialogue with the president; Murphy was seen with Biden at a fundraiser on Saturday, and his voice contrasted with the majority sentiment on Monday's call, noted by the Chicago Sun-Times article.
