with temperatures in the mid 40s and almost no wind today was one of the nicest days we’ve seen in a long time. It was a great day to get out on the ocean and do some fishing.
Captain Chase Eberle of Chasin Tides charters had another good day of talk fishing today with 15 keepers going in the box. They had two fish over 10 pounds with the biggest at 13.
Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star had a tough time with the current, but he still scratched some fish out.

Underway at 5:50am; only the least bit of swell differentiated the ocean from the stillness of our back bay. Beautiful off there today.
Miss Amy & young Mr Tyler gave a 16 block reef unit a hearty shove atop Capt Bob's Reef. It landed perfectly between the outside tug and barge..
Continuing east we soon came upon a good size pod of saddleback dolphin
and another
and another
and another
Thick today.
Coming to us from far away to ride my bow wave; screens showed mountains of sandeels accross a good length of bottom. Presumably a well fed mega gathering--a 'superpod' it's called--fattened up, they were ready to enjoy some surfing.
Holding course and speed, eventually we moved beyond them and lowered a pair of Danforths to begin
..catching shorts.
Not many either.
A skilled young mate, Cody from up north, caught most of them.

Without much current the bite was hard to cipher. How much effort to apply before trying another spot. . .
I thought I'd probably moved just as they were going to start chewing; but no, the current was even more still at our next stop. We suffered more shorts with the addition of sharks..
At my next stop I found no direction to anchor. Wind and current were so still I had to drift - yet the drift was if we were on two anchors.
No wind or currents makes for a beautiful ocean - but a really poor bite.
We netted and bagged a dead snow goose. Likely a victim of bird flu, I'll see if anyone wants to check the bird. They can't have too many samples from 25 miles offshore..
On my last drift a light southerly current began. By the time I'd arrived at my last spot there was enough current for a single anchor set. She stayed dead on the spot. Not saying a whole lot, but with current running we experienced the most action all day.
All that, of course, was after time to head home. Fish almost always bite better in overtime.
Couple days coming that would be fine for inshore toggin but the water's too cold nearshore.
Next calm will likely find me bluefin fishing in a more distant canyon. That's some fun fishing.
