“DBZ isn’t perfect”: Akira Toriyama Surprised DBZ Fans With His Improvisation in Frieza Saga

Late Akira Toriyama’s iconic classic anime series Dragon Ball Z (DBZ) has been remarked with many criticisms for its narrative structure, but nevertheless, it was action-packed with memorable characters. It featured the creation of one of its crucial arcs, the Frieza Saga, which brought out the new improvisational genius of the series creator.

It appears that some of DBZ‘s most beloved elements were the result of Toriyama’s on-the-fly creativity. He has maintained the hunt for the Dragon Balls storyline, a recurring theme in the series. The saga involves battles on Planet Namek and the use of Namekian Dragon Balls. It’s been said that Dragon Ball‘s becoming famous was mostly due to the Z part, as the series ended where it should have been.
Akira Toriyama’s Creative Improvisations in DBZ
Revisiting the Frieza Saga from the Dragon Ball Z series, many noticed how intricate way in which the late Akira Toriyama wove together various plot elements. For instance, the journey to Planet Namek projected his ability to create logical solutions to narrative obstacles. By repurposing Kami’s spaceship as a means of interplanetary travel, he seamlessly expanded the Dragon Ball universe all the while maintaining continuity with established lore.

Viewers have noted that the Dragon Ball hunt’s iteration feels more polished and cohesive than its predecessors. It suggested how Toriyama had refined his narrative structure and technique over time. The tight structure and lack of loose ends in the Frieza Saga displayed a balance between planned narrative and improvised aspects.

In spite of some pacing issues inherent to the anime adaptation, such as extended recaps and occasional padding, the overall arc remains engaging to the viewers. These aspects that were once seen as drawbacks for the series have resurfaced as integral to the DBZ experience, allowing build-up and character development. This sentiment echoes the feelings of many fans who have come to appreciate the series’ sometimes dragging pacing as part of its charm.
It has also been pointed out that characters like Bulma were unnecessarily brought up to Planet Namek, as she was given no role or purpose in the narrative. Her character could have been given a much more prominent role not in terms of battles but in some other way because every major cast seemed important in this particular saga.

Compared to her, Krillin and Piccolo were seen as more active in their roles since the beginning of the DBZ series. Whereas the body-snatching Captain Ginyu of the Ginyu force caught Goku off-guard with his technique which caused major plot problems for other characters.
Character Transformations in the Frieza Saga
The Frieza saga’s success can be attributed only to Toriyama’s improvisational skills along with its character management which led to perfect completion. It introduced the most compelling villain in the whole franchise, Frieza, described by fans as having “zero redeeming qualities” and being “a complete psychopath” in terms of killing others no matter friends or foes. His exact evilness has created a grasping narrative disparity with other characters.

It also showcased the interesting character dynamic and the uneasy alliance between Goku and Vegeta. Even though everyone hated Vegeta for his previous role as an antagonist, they cooperated with him as they shared a common enemy now. It added depth to their relationship and raised the stakes of the conflict.

A more interesting perspective has been highlighted that focuses on the shift in the series. It was observed that Goku was no longer at the center of the story, instead, Gohan was placed to be the most prominent character in the Frieza Saga. The change in focus picks out Toriyama’s willingness to evolve the series and develop its supporting cast.
Dragon Ball Z is currently available to watch in English Dub and Sub on Crunchyroll.
