Laredo Heat SC Defeats CF10 Houston FC 2-0
By Elizabeth Pazmino Ocampo
CF10 Houston FC’s season started at the Village School in the middle of some humid and hot weather in Space City. CF10 would face off against the visiting Laredo Heat SC. The team led by head Jimmy Krueger arrived early on the field with the goal of defending their home turf, knowing that the opponent was going to be a difficult one.
Even though Houston recently was affected by extreme weather, the parents and relatives of the players attended the game in order to support the team.
CF10 is a young team with high school players looking to be showcased in the league. They have trained during the last few weeks, thinking about the home opener. According to assistant coach Carlos Flores, the players are still in the training process but the experience in these games will be essential in strengthening the team. Some of the players who were called upon were even making their NPSL debuts. CF10 was led by 2022-23 Gatorade Texas Boys Soccer Player of the Year Aidan Morrison and 2024 All-Greater Houston Boys Soccer Player of the Year Ben Aviles Vera who brought experience and, above all, confidence to the team.
Although the 2-0 score was in favor of the visitors, CF10 showed a much more aggressive attitude in the second half, creating order and opportunities that unfortunately didn’t show up on the scoreboard.
The Heat played a more compact game with more experienced players that have been playing together for seasons. From the beginning they looked for the goal with a fast game and transitions that allowed some opportunities to surprise their rival.
Laredo, led by head coach John Powell, made no changes going into the second half after securing a goal from Manuel Ponce Casas in the 10th minute and accumulating four corner kicks. Ponce Casas would get his brace in the 50th minute, securing the 2-0 win for the Heat.
It’s clear that Laredo Heat SC will make it hard for other teams in this league with long passes and the speed and strength of their midfield.
The next match for CF10 Houston FC will be on Wednesday, May 22 against Austin United FC at the Village School.
