Springfield Police Arrest Suspect and Seize Loaded Gun Following ShotSpotter Activation
Early in the morning, the quiet of East Columbus Avenue near Liberty Street in Springfield was shattered by gunfire. Springfield Police responded swiftly, seizing a loaded firearm and arresting 34-year-old Fatiah Garland. Officers rushed to the scene after ShotSpotter detected gunfire in the 100 block of Chestnut Street around 2:30 a.m. yesterday. Initially, no victims or property damage were found.
Following the activation, officers from the Springfield Police Real Time Analysis Center (R-TAC), bringing to bear the reach of surveillance technology, identified a suspect vehicle believed to potentially be involved. The vehicle, spotted on Hampden Street, quickly became the focal point of a police search. With the occupants asked to step outside, a loaded firearm was found in the front passenger door of the car. It was at this moment when Garland, who was seated at the front, decided to quickly start to run from the authorities, prompting a chase that culminated in his arrest on East Columbus Avenue.

His past offenses—possession of a firearm and armed assault with intent to murder—lend a gravity to this new slew of charges. Garland now faces the following charges: Carrying a Firearm without a License, Possession of a High-Capacity Magazine/Feeding Device, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, and Firearm Violation with one Prior Violent/Drug Crime.
