PayPal Launches 'Pay with Crypto' to Let U.S. Merchants Accept Over 100 Cryptocurrencies

PayPal has launched a new service dubbed "Pay with Crypto" that enables U.S.-based merchants to accept payments in over 100 different cryptocurrencies, including major assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as more unconventional tokens such as TRUMP and Fartcoin. The feature is part of the company’s ongoing effort to integrate digital assets into its broader payments ecosystem.

Merchants using PayPal’s online payments platform can opt into the service, which is designed to convert customer crypto payments into PayPal’s U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin, PYUSD. Managed by Paxos, PYUSD is then converted into U.S. dollars and settled with the merchant. Depending on the token used, PayPal facilitates the conversion on centralized exchanges like Coinbase or decentralized platforms like Uniswap.
Frank Keller, PayPal’s executive vice president, confirmed that the company will initially offer a promotional transaction fee of 0.99% for the first year. This fee will later increase to 1.5%, still undercutting the 2024 U.S. average of 1.57% for credit card processing, as reported by the Nilson Report.
The service will support several popular wallets at launch, including Coinbase, Kraken, MetaMask, OKX, Binance, Phantom, and Exodus. According to PayPal CEO Alex Chriss, "Using PayPal's open platform, businesses can accept crypto for payments, increase their profit "

"Pay with Crypto" marks PayPal's latest move in the digital asset space, building on its initial support for buying, selling, and holding crypto introduced in 2020. The company has been actively expanding its crypto offerings, notably launching its PYUSD stablecoin in 2023, which has seen its market cap rise to nearly $900 million this year, per CoinGecko data.
While initially available to small businesses in the U.S., PayPal has indicated plans to extend the feature to larger enterprises and international markets, though no specific timeline has been disclosed.
