Orlando Forecast: Intense Heat and Thunderstorms Expected This Weekend
Orlando locals, brace yourselves for another bout of sweltering heat and afternoon thunderstorms this weekend. The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a weather forecast indicating that the Orlando area will continue to face hot and humid conditions, with peak heat indices soaring to 103-107F degrees today. These conditions are expected to intensify over the weekend, potentially prompting Heat Advisories for parts of the area.
"The Atlantic high pressure ridge axis will remain across central Florida today," explained the National Weather Service. This weather pattern is set to sustain a light southerly flow across the region, leading to the development of the east coast sea breeze in the early afternoon. With deep moisture looming in the air, Orlando can expect a more animated east coast sea breeze with showers and storms lifting slowly N/NW along the coast. Consequently, the afternoon storms will bring some relief to the heat as the afternoon wears on.
As for the rainfall, the service has warned of scattered to numerous showers and storms with locally heavy downpours, estimating up to 1-3 inches of rain in certain parts of the region. Forecast soundings point out some drier air aloft, allowing for the possibility of stronger storms that could produce frequent lightning and gusty winds ranging from 40-50 mph. Some small hail could also be in the mix, although that remains a lesser possibility.
Looking ahead to the weekend, "Atlantic ridge axis remains across central Florida into Saturday and then begins to shift a little farther northward," the weather service noted. This shift will turn the light southerly flow southeast, potentially bringing in drier air on Sunday. Despite a slight reduction in shower and storm chances on Sunday, conditions are expected to remain hot and humid, with peak heat index values that may tick up towards the 108-109F mark. Boating conditions over the weekend are generally favorable with southeast winds of 10-15 knots and seas maintaining at 2-3 feet.
