An alarm reportedly went off at around 6.30am, with the 200 people inside urgently evacuated to designated assembly points.
Meanwhile, traffic was also diverted away from the area.
Travellers have now been urgently warned by Jersey Police “to avoid attending the airport until further notice”.
In a statement, the Ports of Jersey added: “The airport has been evacuated due to a security incident and we are working with States of Jersey Police to manage the incident.
“Airport Operations are currently suspended. We are advising passengers to contact their airlines for updates.
“We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the cooperation and understanding of passengers during this time.
“Our top priority is ensuring the safety and security of everyone at the airport.”
Airport operations director Ashley Maggs said this morning that they were “taking every precaution”.
In a later press conference at 9.30am, he said the incident was “evolving well” – and that the airport was expected to reopen in “a couple of hours”.
He added: “Some bags are still in central search and obviously we’ll have to go through a process of taking bags off the plane if they’re on the plane or anything in central search is going to be re-screened.

“Armed police arrived, fire trucks and lots of police vehicles turned up at the airport, I think we all realised it was a serious matter,” he said.
