Hurricanes DL Anthony Campbell took unique path to Miami, after adding 10 pounds and refining technique looking to make an impact
Miami took a chance on 6-7, 300-pound DT Anthony Campbell last year, bringing him in as a fifth-year senior from ULM, where he was a backup for two years and didn’t have much production.
Not exactly much of a resume, right?
But Miami coaches saw his raw potential in his size and athleticism and believed in developing him … and that’s what happened last year when Campbell redshirted.
This year is his final one in college, and Campbell is starting to show flashes that he can help out on the interior of this defensive line.
“It’s been a process, I’ve just been trusting the coaches, my teammates,” Campbell said on Tuesday. “Everyone has been pushing me. I’ve been focusing on the technique, getting better each day.”
Campbell began his football journey at Bartow (Fla.) High School, where he was lightly recruited as a third-team All-Polk County selection his senior year. He attended Independence Community College for two years (2019 and 2020) before transferring to Louisiana-Monroe. In his final season there, 2022, he played 208 reps per Pro Football Focus and had 13 tackles and 3.5 TFL.
When Miami gave him a spot, Campbell jumped at the opportunity.
“My journey I started at Independence, went to ULM, then came to Miami,” Campbell said. “I hit the portal in 2023 the spring and Miami hit me up and I had a couple of offers and Miami just hit home because I have family here, I’m from Central Florida, it’s home. I’d been away since 2019.”
Campbell says he arrived at 290 pounds and has gained 10 pounds since. He says in particular Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain have taken on leadership roles and helped him along.
“I got stronger in the weight room, faster,” he says.
It’s a unique journey for Campbell, and he hopes it will have a special ending this year … for him and this team.
“I’m focused on myself – footwork, all that stuff,” Campbell says. “Now I’m ready.”
