Oconee Bass Fishing Report – July 7, 2024
Ronnie Garrison said the bite at Lake Oconee for his club tournament on Sunday was brutal. Ten anglers weighed in 10 keepers.
Oconee: Level: 1 foot below 435 at daylight but full pool by noon and then no current. Temp: 85 degrees. Clarity: Slight stain.
Bass: Tournament angler Ronnie Garrison reports, “The weather was hot but cloudy, and a slight breeze all day helped. The bite was tough at Oconee yesterday for the Flint River Bass Club. One limit was caught by Chuck Croft, who won with five fish that weighed 7.95 pounds. He said he got a lot of bites early around grass with a buzzbait but lost several keepers. He filled his limit with a late keeper from brush. Duane Case had four bass weighing 5.86 pounds for second. He said shaky heads around docks is how he caught his fish. Interestingly, he fished with Doug Acree, and Doug zeroed—from the front of the boat.

“I had three for 4.54 pound and third place. One was caught on a buzzbait quick at 6:10, then I lost a second one that looked like a keeper when it jumped. One came on a Trick Worm from grass at 7:30. I caught more than a dozen bass I measured since they looked like keepers. Many were THAT close. I also had several more not even close.
“At noon, I started fishing deeper brush and landed a line burner on a shaky head from 15 feet deep on a point. That was the only deep bite I got.
“Fourth place and big fish was Chuck Denard with one at 2.38. He said he caught it from grass on a wacky-rigged worm. Oddly, he had big fish two months ago and said both came from the same grass about 10 feet apart.
“It must have been a frog washer Saturday night. All the driveways going to Long Shoals had washed gravel out in road. They must have pulled water hard to keep it down. Grassbeds on points were all bent over toward the dam.
“Ten fishermen, 10 keepers and four zeroes after fishing from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m.!”
