95 days until Michigan football: Will the over on the Vegas win total hit?
There are 95 days until the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines football team takes the field in the Aug. 31 opener against Fresno State. Each day until then, we’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
Michigan enters the season with a Vegas over/under win total of 9.5, which remains one of the most intriguing props in the country. This program has lost a ton from the last few years, including its most important piece in former head coach Jim Harbaugh. That said, there are scenarios in play where both sides of the over/under are very much in play in very different scenarios.
Quarterback play might be the biggest determining factor when it comes to Michigan’s outlook this season. It feels like the defense can give the Wolverines a chance to win, and darn near make them favorites to win, every Saturday. But the offensive outlook is so critical to what this team might ultimately look like, and might make the biggest difference between having a season like 2017, where the team finished 8-5, or 2021, where Michigan got just enough at quarterback to make a run to the College Football Playoffs.
When sifting through the schedule to rack your brain about which side of the over/under you would like to take, it really comes down to tiering out the schedule.
There are not as many “automatic” wins on the schedule as the last few seasons, but there are a few that fit that category. Arkansas State, at Indiana and at home against Northwestern might make up that group, which gets Michigan to three right off the bat. That’s still a lot of work to go until hitting an over, though.
From there, the tier moves to “likely wins,” headlined by Fresno State in the season opener. Michigan enters as a 22.5-point favorite, but the Bulldogs could prove a much tougher opponent. U-M should have the talent and coaching advantage, but a night game in week one could make things interesting. Others in the “likely wins” category could be Minnesota, at Illinois and Michigan State. If all of those go Michigan’s way, that’s 7 wins.
Five games on this schedule will make or break Michigan in Texas, USC, at Washington, Oregon and at Ohio State. To hit the over, Michigan has to grab three of those. If you followed the first countdown post in the series, we predicted Michigan to do just that, grabbing games against Texas, USC and Washington with losses to Oregon and Ohio State.
